Choosing a Hummingbird Feeder

A hummingbird feeder is a container of sugar water sitting in the sun, which makes cleaning access the most important thing you are buying. Almost every other feature is downstream of that.

The short answer

  • Saucer designs leak less, drip less, and come apart for cleaning in seconds. Inverted bottles hold more and are harder to keep clean, which is the wrong trade for a food that spoils in two days.
  • Small capacity is a feature. Above about 85°F (29°C) nectar has to be changed every 2 days, so buy a feeder you can empty in that time.
  • Buy for how it comes apart. If the base does not separate fully from the reservoir and the ports do not lift out, you cannot reach the surfaces where black mold grows.
  • Skip yellow parts, skip built-in bee guards you cannot remove, and skip any feeder without a wide mouth you can get a brush into.

Choose a hummingbird feeder by how fast you can take it apart, wash it, and put it back together. Everything else is secondary, because sugar water in summer sun grows yeast and black mold within days, and a feeder that is tedious to clean simply does not get cleaned often enough.

That leads to two conclusions most product pages resist. Saucer designs beat inverted bottles for almost every backyard. And small capacity is an advantage rather than a compromise, since nectar has to be thrown out every two days in hot weather no matter how much is left.

Saucer or inverted bottle#

The distinction is where the nectar sits relative to the feeding ports, and it drives almost every practical difference.

An inverted bottle holds nectar above the ports. A partial vacuum keeps it from pouring out. When the sun warms the air trapped at the top, that air expands and pushes nectar through the ports, which is why bottle feeders drip onto the ground and attract ants and wasps. They are also awkward to clean: the reservoir is a narrow tube and the ports sit in a base plate with recessed channels.

A saucer holds nectar in a shallow dish below the ports. Birds reach down through the port to drink. Nothing is under pressure, so nothing is pushed out. Rain cannot get in easily either. The whole thing separates into a lid and a dish, both of which you can scrub flat in about thirty seconds.

The honest counterpoint: bottle feeders make the nectar level obvious from a window, and some saucer designs have shallow dishes that go dry faster than you expect in a busy yard. Capacity is not the feature you think it is

Above about 85°F (29°C), nectar must be changed every 2 days. Between 70 and 85°F (21 to 29°C), every 3 days. A 32 ounce (950 ml) feeder in a yard with two birds means pouring out most of a quart twice a week. Buy the size you will empty, not the size you would like to refill less often.

The four criteria that decide quality#

1. It comes apart completely, without tools. The lid should separate from the dish, and the port inserts should lift out. Any surface you cannot see is a surface you cannot clean, and black mold in a port channel is invisible until it is well established. The method is in cleaning a hummingbird feeder.

2. Wide openings. A reservoir mouth you can fit a hand or a full-sized bottle brush into. Narrow-necked bottles require specialized brushes that most people never buy.

3. Port design. Ports should be a simple molded opening, not a multi-part assembly with a press-fit yellow bee guard glued in. Removable bee guards are fine. Fixed ones trap sugar residue in a place no brush reaches.

4. Materials that survive sun. Glass reservoirs do not cloud or absorb odors and handle dishwasher heat, but they break. Good polycarbonate and copolyester last several seasons. Do not buy on port count. Hummingbirds are aggressively territorial, and one dominant ruby-throated hummingbird will defend an eight-port feeder against all comers just as readily as a three-port one. Perches, and whether you want them#

A perch ring lets birds sit while feeding, which saves them energy and gives you longer views. It also lets a dominant bird settle in and guard the feeder more effectively, and in cold snaps a perched bird conserves noticeably more energy.

Some people prefer perchless feeders on the theory that hovering birds spend less time guarding. The evidence for that is thin. Choose the perch if you like watching them, skip it if a single bully is dominating your yard.

Fill only what you will use

Mix nectar at 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water and fill the feeder about two thirds. A partly filled feeder is lighter, swings less, and makes the every-two-day discard feel like less of a waste. The full method is in the hummingbird nectar recipe.

Pests, and what the feeder design can do about them#

Ants and wasps are design problems, not accidents.

Ants climb the hanger. A moat, which is a small cup of plain water between the hook and the feeder, stops them completely as long as it stays filled. Built-in moats are better than add-ons because they never get forgotten. Never use oil in a moat. Ants in a hummingbird feeder covers refill intervals.

Wasps and bees are drawn to drips and to yellow. A saucer feeder that does not leak removes most of the attraction, and choosing a feeder without yellow accents removes the rest. Fixed bee guards are less useful than simply not dripping, as explained in bees and wasps at hummingbird feeders.

Cloudy nectar means throw it out, not top it up

Cloudiness, stringiness or black specks in the ports mean fermentation or mold. Discard the whole batch, scrub with hot water and a brush, and rinse thoroughly. Fermented nectar and mold can be fatal to hummingbirds, and the risk rises steeply above 85°F (29°C).

Tradeoffs where reasonable people differ#

Glass or plastic. Glass cleans perfectly and lasts indefinitely if you do not drop it. Plastic survives being dropped and freezing, and weighs less on a slender hook. Neither is wrong.

One large or several small. Several small feeders spread out is better for the birds and better for viewing. It is also more cleaning. If you will only reliably maintain one feeder, maintain one.

How people buy the wrong hummingbird feeder#

  1. Buying for capacity. The most common error. A large reservoir guarantees waste and encourages leaving old nectar out too long.
  2. Buying a decorative blown-glass bottle. Beautiful, and often impossible to clean past the neck.
  3. Ignoring how the base attaches. Screw-on bases with fine threads seize with dried sugar. Look for a wide, coarse thread or a clip.
  4. Choosing yellow bee guards. They advertise to wasps.
  5. Skipping the ant moat. Then buying one separately anyway three weeks later.
  6. Assuming more ports means more birds. Territory decides that, not hardware.

Buy the small saucer with the removable ports and the built-in moat, keep a second one so there is always a clean feeder ready to swap in, and the maintenance problem mostly disappears.

Frequently asked questions#

Is a saucer or bottle hummingbird feeder better?

Saucer feeders are better for most people. Nectar sits below the ports so there is no pressure pushing it out, which means fewer drips, fewer ants and wasps, and no vacuum-driven leaking when the feeder heats up. They also open into two flat pieces that a brush reaches easily. Bottle feeders hold more nectar, which is rarely an advantage.

What size hummingbird feeder should I buy?

Small: 8 to 12 ounces (240 to 350 ml) for a busy yard, and as little as 4 to 6 ounces (120 to 180 ml) if you get one or two birds. Nectar must be discarded every two days in hot weather, so a large reservoir means pouring most of it away. Two small feeders out of sight of each other attract more birds than one large one anyway.

Do hummingbird feeders need to be red?

Some red on the feeder helps birds find it initially, and nearly every feeder has it. Red dye in the nectar is a different question and the answer is no: plain white sugar and water is what to use. Avoid yellow accents, which attract wasps more than hummingbirds.

How do I stop a hummingbird feeder from leaking?

Buy a saucer design. Inverted bottles leak because air pressure inside the reservoir rises as the sun warms it and pushes nectar out through the ports. Saucer feeders hold nectar below the ports, so warming does not force liquid out. If you keep a bottle feeder, move it into shade and fill it only about two thirds.

Are built-in ant moats worth it?

Yes, if the moat is part of the hanger and can be filled with plain water. An ant moat is the only reliable ant defense, and a built-in one is more convenient than an add-on. Never fill a moat with oil, which can foul feathers.

How many ports does a hummingbird feeder need?

Three to five is plenty. Hummingbirds are territorial and a dominant bird will usually defend the whole feeder regardless of port count, so extra ports add cleaning work more than they add birds. If you want to feed several, hang separate small feeders where each cannot see the other.
