Hummingbird Feeders
A hummingbird feeder is the only feeder you own that can make birds sick in three days of hot weather. Almost every decision about buying one comes back to how fast you can take it apart.
The short answer
- A saucer (dish) feeder holds nectar below the ports, so it does not drip, does not drown bees in sugar water, and comes apart into two washable pieces. It is the better buy for most yards.
- Inverted bottle feeders hold more and look better on a porch, but warm air in the reservoir pushes nectar out of the ports on hot afternoons.
- Nectar is 4 parts water to 1 part white granulated sugar. No red dye, no honey, no brown sugar, no artificial sweetener.
- Buy for the sink, not the yard: if the feeder does not open wide enough for a bottle brush to reach every surface, it will grow black mold in the ports.
- An ant moat filled with plain water stops ants completely. Bee guards help, but the real fix for wasps is a feeder that keeps nectar out of reach.
A hummingbird feeder is a sealed reservoir of sugar water with small ports a hummingbird can reach its tongue into. There are two shapes worth owning: the saucer, a flat dish with ports in the lid, and the inverted bottle, a vertical reservoir that feeds a base by vacuum. The saucer wins on leaks, insects and cleaning. The bottle wins on capacity and on the size of the seed-level window you can read from the kitchen.
Everything else about the purchase follows from one question: can you get a brush onto every interior surface in under a minute? Sugar water at 85°F (29°C) grows yeast and black mold faster than anything else in your yard, and a feeder you dread washing is a feeder that gets washed late.

Saucer versus inverted bottle#
The physics is the whole story. In a bottle feeder, nectar is held up by a partial vacuum. Warm the air in the top of that bottle by an hour of afternoon sun and the air expands, pressure rises, and nectar pushes out through the ports and runs down the outside. That drip is what brings ants, wasps and the neighborhood's yellowjackets.
A saucer feeder has no head of liquid above the ports at all. Nectar sits in a shallow tray and the bird reaches down about half an inch (1 cm) to drink. Nothing pushes it anywhere.

Which one to buy
If you are buying your first feeder, buy a small saucer. Its low capacity is not a drawback: in a normal yard the nectar has to be replaced every two to four days anyway, so a large reservoir mostly means pouring good sugar water down the drain.
The case for a bottle feeder is real but narrow. If you live somewhere with heavy hummingbird traffic, a west-coast yard full of Anna's hummingbirds or a fall rufous hummingbird stopover, a bottle holds enough to get through a day of hard use, and hanging it in full shade removes most of the leak problem.
What goes in it#
Four parts water to one part plain white granulated sugar. That is the entire recipe, and it approximates the sugar concentration of the flowers hummingbirds evolved to feed on. Four things that do not belong in a feeder
Honey ferments and grows fungus that can kill hummingbirds. Brown, raw and turbinado sugars contain iron and molasses that hummingbirds cannot process well. Artificial sweeteners provide no calories at all to a bird that needs roughly its own body weight in nectar daily. Red dye is unnecessary at best. See what not to feed birds.
Ports, perches and feeding rings#
Port design decides who else shows up. A port that is a simple open hole in the lid lets a wasp walk straight in. A port with a raised collar, a narrow throat, or a small internal baffle keeps nectar at a depth a hummingbird tongue reaches easily and a bee's does not.
Perches are optional and worth having. A hovering hummingbird burns energy at a startling rate, so a bird given a ring perch will often sit for thirty seconds or more. That is better for the bird and much better for watching. Perches do not open the feeder up to larger species, because almost nothing else can use the ports.
Look for port collars you can remove or reach into. Molded-in ports with a narrow neck are the single most common place mold survives a wash, because a bottle brush cannot follow the curve. Some feeders include a small port brush; that is a good sign about the design.
Ant moats and bee guards#
Ants are a solved problem. A moat is a small cup, usually 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) across, that hangs between the hook and the feeder. Fill it with plain water. Ants will not cross it. In hot dry weather it evaporates in two or three days, so top it up every time you change the nectar. Some feeders build the moat into the hanger, which is convenient but usually shallow. Bees and wasps are harder. Bee guards are plastic mesh cages that fit over each port, and they work by geometry: the insect can reach the guard but not the liquid beyond it. They fail once nectar drips onto the guard itself, which is the leak problem again. If wasps have taken over a bottle feeder, switching to a saucer solves it more reliably than any accessory. Move it six feet
A wasp colony that has learned a feeder location will keep returning to that spot for days after you take the feeder down. Moving the feeder 6 to 10 feet (2 to 3 m) breaks the pattern faster than any guard, and hummingbirds relocate it within a few hours.
How often nectar has to change#
Spoilage tracks temperature, not the calendar. Cloudy liquid, floating black specks or a slick film on the plastic all mean the feeder is past due, whatever the schedule says.

Hanging the feeder in afternoon shade buys you close to a full day at the hot end of that table, and shade costs nothing.
Cleaning access, which is really a purchase decision#
Wash with hot water and a brush at every nectar change. Sugar water leaves a film that a rinse does not remove, and that film is what the yeast lives in. Once a week, or any time you see black spotting, take the feeder fully apart and scrub every gasket, port and thread. Before you buy, check the feeder for these:
- Wide mouth. A reservoir opening under 2 inches (5 cm) will not admit a hand or a normal brush.
- Few parts, all separable. Gaskets should lift out. Anything glued is a mold reservoir.
- Dishwasher-safe top rack, or at least tolerant of hot water without clouding.
- No decorative crevices. Molded flowers and textured glass look good and clean badly.
Where to hang it and when#
Hummingbirds are not shy about placement, which gives you unusual freedom. Hang the feeder where you can see it, in afternoon shade, within about 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 m) of a shrub or a tree branch that a bird can perch on to watch its feeder, because males will spend more time guarding a perch than drinking.
Timing matters more than position. If a dominant male has claimed your only feeder and is chasing everything away, add a second feeder out of sight of the first, around a corner or on the other side of the house. A setup that works#
- A small saucer feeder, 8 oz (240 ml) or less, with removable port collars and a wide opening.
- Fresh 4:1 nectar, no dye, made in batches you will use inside a week.
- An ant moat on the hanger, topped up at every nectar change.
- Hung in afternoon shade, in sight of a window, near a perching branch.
- Washed at every change, fully dismantled weekly.
- A second feeder out of line of sight once the chasing starts.

Frequently asked questions#
Are saucer or bottle hummingbird feeders better?
Saucer feeders are better for most people. Nectar sits in a shallow dish below the feeding ports, so there is no pressure pushing it out, no sticky drip line down the pole, and far less insect interest. Inverted bottle feeders hold more nectar and are easier to see the level in, but they leak when the sun warms the trapped air in the reservoir.
What is the correct hummingbird nectar ratio?
Four parts water to one part plain white granulated sugar, by volume. Stir until dissolved. Boiling is optional and only helps the sugar dissolve and the mix keep slightly longer in the refrigerator, since the feeder is contaminated by the first bird that visits either way. Never use honey, brown sugar, raw sugar, molasses or red dye.
How often should I change hummingbird nectar?
Every two days when highs are above 90°F (32°C), every three days in the 80s (about 27 to 31°C), and every four to five days when it stays below 70°F (21°C). Change it immediately if the nectar looks cloudy, has floating specks, or a film has formed on the reservoir wall.
How do I keep ants out of a hummingbird feeder?

Some red on the feeder body helps birds find it, which is why nearly every feeder sold has a red base or red ports. The nectar itself must stay clear. Red dye in the liquid serves no purpose the bird needs and has no place in a feeder.
