Cleaning a Hummingbird Feeder

Sugar water is a growth medium. In summer heat a hummingbird feeder goes from fresh to fermenting in about two days, and clear nectar tells you nothing about what is living in it.

The short answer

  • Change the nectar every 2 days above 85°F (29°C), every 3 to 4 days in mild weather, and clean the feeder at every change.
  • Clear nectar is not clean nectar. Yeast and bacteria ferment sugar water long before it looks cloudy.
  • Scrub with hot water and a port brush every time. Use a 1 part bleach to 9 parts water soak for about 10 minutes when there is mold, then rinse thoroughly and dry completely.

The reason is simple and unforgiving. Sugar water at 20 to 25 percent concentration, sitting outdoors, is close to an ideal culture medium for yeasts and bacteria. Warmth does the rest. A feeder hanging in full afternoon sun can run considerably hotter than the air around it, and fermentation follows.

Nothing about the appearance of the nectar tells you where it is in that process. By the time it looks cloudy, it has been unsuitable for a day or more. Change intervals by temperature#

Use the daytime high, not the average, and shorten the interval if the feeder sits in direct sun.

These are outside limits, not targets. If a feeder is busy enough that hummingbirds empty it in a day, you get the change for free and the schedule stops mattering.

Fermented nectar makes birds sick

Moldy and fermented nectar is associated with fungal infection of a hummingbird's tongue and bill, which can swell to the point where the bird cannot feed. A hummingbird burns through its energy reserves in hours, so an infection that interferes with feeding is often fatal. This is why the change interval is short and why "it still looks fine" is not a test.

The cleaning method, every change#

The routine clean takes about five minutes once you have the brushes.

  1. Empty the old nectar into the sink or onto the ground away from the feeder. Do not save it and do not top up.
  2. Take the feeder fully apart: base, reservoir, ports, feeding flowers, bee guards, perch ring, gasket or O ring.
  3. Rinse in hot water, as hot as your hands and the plastic tolerate.
  4. Scrub every surface, using a bottle brush in the reservoir and a narrow port brush or pipe cleaner through each feeding port. Ports are where mold establishes and where a rinse never reaches.
  5. Rinse thoroughly until there is no slipperiness and no residual smell.
  6. Refill with fresh nectar, 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water, made to the standard in the hummingbird nectar recipe. No red dye, no honey, no brown sugar.

You do not need to dry a nectar feeder completely before refilling the way you do a seed feeder, because you are adding liquid anyway. What you do need is for the bleach soak, when you use one, to be rinsed out completely.

The weekly disinfection#

Hot water and scrubbing handle the routine. About once a week in hot weather, and any time you see black specks, cloudiness, a slimy film or dead insects inside, disinfect properly.

Mix 1 part regular unscented household bleach to 9 parts water, roughly a 10 percent bleach solution. Submerge the dismantled feeder for about 10 minutes, scrub again while the parts are still in the solution, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and let everything dry completely before refilling. Mix the solution fresh each time.

Black mold: what it is and how to remove it#

The black specks that appear in ports and around the gasket are mold colonies, usually rooted into micro scratches in the plastic. Once established they resist rinsing, because the growth sits below the surface plane you can wipe.

To clear it: full bleach soak as above, then mechanical removal. Push a pipe cleaner all the way through each port and twist. Use a soft brush on the reservoir walls rather than an abrasive pad, because scratching the plastic creates exactly the anchoring points mold needs.

Freeze the ports clean

For stubborn residue in narrow ports, soak the parts in hot water first to soften the sugar glaze, and keep a bag of cheap pipe cleaners with your cleaning kit. A pipe cleaner costs almost nothing, fits any port geometry, and reaches places no purpose-made brush does.

The soap debate, settled as far as it can be#

Some longtime hummingbird enthusiasts insist on never using soap, on the grounds that residue harms hummingbirds or taints the nectar. Others clean with dish soap every time and report no problems across decades.

The honest position: there is no good evidence that properly rinsed dish soap harms hummingbirds, and there is a clear mechanical case that soap removes sugar film that hot water alone leaves behind. The concern is not baseless either, because a poorly rinsed feeder does hold detergent, and sugar syrup will carry the taste.

Practical resolution. Use hot water and a brush for the routine changes, which is genuinely sufficient most of the time. Use dish soap when there is greasy residue, ant or bee debris, or persistent film, and then rinse until the water runs clear and the parts feel squeaky rather than slippery. Use bleach at 1 to 9 for mold and weekly maintenance in heat. Nobody in this argument is being reckless; they are weighting rinse quality differently.

Placement changes how often you clean#

Where you hang the feeder affects spoilage more than any cleaning product does.

  • Morning sun, afternoon shade is the ideal. Direct afternoon sun can add many degrees to the nectar and cut its usable life in half.
  • Fill less. A quarter full feeder that is emptied and refilled every two days is better than a full one changed on the same schedule. Most yards support far fewer hummingbirds than the feeder holds nectar for.

Leaks are a cleaning problem

A dripping feeder is not just wasteful. The sticky trail down the outside draws ants, wasps and mold, and it means the gasket or O ring has hardened. What to do at the end of the season#

When hummingbirds have moved through, do not just bring the feeder inside. Give it a full bleach soak, scrub every port, rinse thoroughly and dry it completely before storage, then store it disassembled so the gasket is not compressed all winter.
