Bird Feeder and Seed Comparisons

Each page here answers one 'X versus Y' question with a comparison table, a straight verdict, and the specific conditions under which the verdict flips. We compare categories and materials, never brands.

The short answer

  • Every page in this section compares a type against a type, or a material against a material, because we do not run a test lab and will not pretend otherwise.
  • Each comparison ends with a default answer and the conditions that overturn it, since most of these questions have a different answer in a Texas July than in a Minnesota January.
  • Prices are approximate 2026 US retail ranges, given as ranges on purpose: seed prices move within a single season and hardware prices vary by region and outlet.
  • Three of the eight comparisons have a clear winner for most people. The other five turn on your yard, your climate and which birds you are actually trying to feed.
  • Two comparisons resolve the same way in the end: the placement of the feeder decides more than the choice between the two options being compared.

This section exists because most bird feeding decisions arrive as a pair. You are standing in an aisle holding two bags, or two feeders, and the question is not 'what is best' but 'which of these two'. That is a narrower and more answerable question, and it is the only kind this section takes on.

Each page follows the same shape: what the real difference is (usually not the one on the packaging), a head-to-head table of concrete criteria, who each option is genuinely right for, the situations where the answer flips, an honest cost section, and a verdict stated in one sentence. Every page finishes with the specific mistakes people make with each option, because the failure modes are often more useful than the comparison itself.

What you will not find is a brand, a model number, or a ranking. We compare a caged feeder against a weight-activated feeder, safflower against black oil sunflower, a saucer nectar feeder against an inverted bottle. Those categories behave predictably. A specific product does not, and it will not exist in three years.

Why we compare categories, not models#

ProBirdFeeder does not test products. There is no lab here, no rack of feeders in a yard being scored, no affiliate revenue, and no shopping links. That position is set out in full in the editorial policy and in how we research, and it has a direct consequence for this section: any comparison that requires measured performance data is a comparison we are not equipped to publish, so we do not publish it.

What we can do honestly is compare mechanisms. A wire cage with a 1.5 inch (4 cm) grid excludes everything wider than 1.5 inches, and that is geometry rather than an opinion. Safflower has a bitter seed coat that most gray squirrels reject, which is a property of the seed and not of a particular bag. A saucer nectar feeder holds liquid below its ports, so gravity cannot push nectar out, while an inverted bottle holds liquid above its ports and warm air in the headspace pushes it out on a sunny morning. None of that needs a test rig. It needs a clear description of how each design works and where each one fails.

There is a second reason, which is that model-level advice ages badly. Manufacturers revise tooling, change suppliers and discontinue lines constantly, so a list of recommended products is stale within about two seasons. The criteria in how to choose a bird feeder were true twenty years ago and will be true in twenty more. We would rather teach you to look at an unfamiliar feeder and see in ten seconds that its ports are unprotected plastic.

What a verdict here means

A verdict is our reading of how the two designs behave, based on published guidance from ornithological organizations, on how the mechanisms physically work, and on the failure patterns that come up constantly. It is not a test result. Where the two options are genuinely close, the page says they are close instead of inventing a winner.

The food comparisons#

Safflower vs sunflower

The verdict is that black oil sunflower is the better everyday seed and safflower is a targeted tool. Safflower costs more per pound, carries less oil per kernel, and is refused outright by some birds that eat sunflower without hesitation. What you buy it for is exclusion: most gray squirrels, most grackles and blackbirds and most starlings leave it alone while cardinals eat it eagerly. Nyjer vs sunflower hearts

This one surprises people. Nyjer is the traditional finch seed and it is expensive, perishable, and largely wasted in the wrong feeder. Sunflower hearts cost less per pound of food actually eaten, feed goldfinches perfectly well, and feed thirty other species besides. Nyjer earns its price only when exclusion is the point, which is a narrower case than the marketing suggests.

Seed mix vs straight seed

The cheapest bag on the shelf is mostly milo, wheat and oats, and most of it ends up on the ground. Once you divide the price by the fraction that birds actually eat, the bargain bag is not a bargain, and it also brings seed mess and rodents with it. The feeder comparisons#

Tube vs hopper

A tube feeder is a small-bird machine: short perches, visible seed column, easy to hang and easy to diagnose. A hopper gives heavy-bodied birds a surface to stand on, holds more, and protects seed from rain, at the price of hiding a damp, caking layer in the base. Most yards end up with both, on the same baffled pole, which is the arrangement described in building a feeding station.

Weight-activated vs caged

Both are decent second lines of defense and neither is a first line. A weight-activated feeder has a mechanism to calibrate, and a dial set aggressively enough to exclude grackles will also exclude cardinals and jays. A caged feeder has no mechanism at all, which is its main virtue, but it excludes anything wider than the grid, cardinals included. Both fail completely if the feeder sits within jumping distance, which is why both pages send you back to stopping squirrels first.

The nectar feeder comparisons#

Two of the eight pages deal with hummingbird feeders, because that is where the most consequential mistakes get made. Nectar is a food that spoils in a day and a half in hot weather, and a feeder that is hard to take apart is a feeder that does not get cleaned. So the two comparisons, saucer versus inverted and glass versus plastic, both come down to the same question: can you reach every interior surface with a brush in under a minute?

Neither page has anything to say about nectar formulation, because there is nothing to compare. It is one part white sugar to four parts water, no dye, no honey, no substitutes, every time, and it is set out in the hummingbird nectar recipe. No comparison here overrides the cleaning schedule

Whichever option a page recommends, the feeder still has to be cleaned on the schedule in the cleaning schedule: nectar feeders every two days in hot weather, seed feeders every one to two weeks and immediately after any wet spell. A feeder that wins a comparison and then sits dirty is worse for birds than the option that lost.

How to read the price ranges#

Every cost figure in this section is an approximate 2026 US retail range, and the range is wide on purpose. Seed prices swing with harvests, freight and packaging size, and the same 20 lb (9 kg) bag can differ by half again between a farm store and a garden center. Hardware prices vary less but still vary by region and outlet.

Two habits make the numbers usable. First, always convert to price per pound before comparing bags, because bag sizes are chosen to defeat exactly that comparison. Second, for seed, work out the price per pound of food birds actually eat rather than the price per pound in the bag. That single calculation, explained on the seed mix page, reverses most shelf-price judgments. How much seed you actually use turns that into a monthly budget.

Buy the smallest bag first

Whichever side of a seed comparison you land on, buy a small bag before a 40 lb (18 kg) one. Birds take one to three weeks to accept an unfamiliar seed, and seed that sits for months goes rancid in storage. Storage life and bin choice are covered in storing bird seed.

The thing that outranks every comparison here#

Read enough of these pages and a pattern emerges. The choice between two feeders or two seeds usually matters less than where the feeder hangs, how often it is cleaned, and whether there is cover within about 10 feet (3 m) for birds to escape into. A mediocre tube feeder on a properly baffled pole beats an excellent feeder hanging from a branch, every time, and no seed choice compensates for a feeder that never gets scrubbed.

When we get one wrong#

These pages state positions, and stated positions are sometimes wrong. Where new guidance from a body like Cornell Lab or Audubon contradicts something here, we change the page and log it in corrections. Where the evidence is thin, the page says the evidence is thin rather than dressing up a guess, which happens more often than you might expect in bird feeding. Much of what circulates as settled fact about feeder preferences rests on a small number of studies and a large amount of repetition.

Do you test the feeders and seed you compare?

No. ProBirdFeeder does not test products, run trials or score models, and no page here claims otherwise. These comparisons describe how each type or material works mechanically, what it excludes and what it fails at, drawing on published guidance from ornithological organizations. If a question genuinely requires measured data we do not have, the page says so.

Why do you not name specific brands?

Two reasons. Manufacturers revise and discontinue models constantly, so brand advice is stale within about two seasons, while the criteria that make a feeder good stay fixed for decades. And we take no affiliate revenue, so there is nothing to be gained by naming products. Judging a feeder by its port collars and its base beats trusting any recommendation.

Are the prices in this section reliable?

They are approximate 2026 US retail ranges, and they are ranges because prices move. Seed in particular swings with harvests, freight and bag size, and regional differences are large. Use the figures to compare options against each other rather than as a budget, and always convert to price per pound before comparing two bags.

Which comparison should I read first?

If you are choosing your first setup, none of them. Read the beginner setup and get a baffled pole in the right place first, because placement outranks every choice compared here. If you already have a feeder and a specific problem, start with the comparison that names your problem: squirrels, starlings, cost per pound, or leaking nectar.

What if my situation is in the 'answer flips' section on two different pages?

Then the pages are telling you your yard is unusual, which is common. Follow the flip conditions rather than the default verdicts, and expect to run two feeders instead of one. Multiple feeders with different foods, spaced apart, solve more problems than any single perfect choice does.
