Weight-Activated vs Caged Feeders

Both designs work, both exclude birds you may want, and both fail completely if the feeder sits within jumping distance. Choose by which birds you are willing to lose.

The short answer

  • Neither design is a first line of defense. A smooth pole with a correctly sized baffle, out of jumping range, decides the outcome before the feeder does.
  • A weight-activated feeder closes its ports under load. Set light enough to exclude grackles, it also excludes cardinals, jays and even large woodpeckers.
  • A caged feeder excludes anything wider than the grid, cardinals included, unless you buy a wider grid that squirrels can then squeeze through.
  • A grid around 1.5 inches (4 cm) admits chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, goldfinches and house finches, and stops squirrels, jays and doves. Cardinals mostly cannot pass it.
  • Weight-activated mechanisms freeze, wear and get defeated by juveniles. Cages have nothing to go wrong, which is their main advantage.

These are the two mainstream answers to squirrels at a seed feeder, and they solve the problem in opposite ways. A weight-activated feeder measures the animal and shuts the ports when something heavy lands. A caged feeder measures nothing and simply puts a wire grid between the seed and anything too wide to fit through it.

Before either of them matters, the placement has to be right. A squirrel that can reach the feeder from a fence, a branch or the ground has all day to work on your mechanism, and it will find a way to hang from the top, chew a port, or wait for a light juvenile to trip nothing at all. The geometry in stopping squirrels is not an optional extra to these products. It is the thing that makes them work.

What the real difference is#

A weight-activated feeder has an outer shroud held up by a spring. When something heavier than the trip weight stands on the perch ring, the shroud slides down and covers the ports. Most models have a dial that sets the trip weight. That mechanism is clever and it is also the design's whole liability: springs weaken, the shroud sticks when it ices up, seed dust gums the track, and a light juvenile squirrel can feed without ever tripping it.

A caged feeder has no mechanism. It is a tube or seed reservoir inside a welded wire cage, and it works on geometry: a chickadee is narrower than the grid opening and a squirrel is not. Nothing to calibrate, nothing to freeze, nothing to wear out. The grid dimension is the entire specification, and it decides both which pests are excluded and which birds are.

Here is the point people miss. Neither design is selective for pests. Both exclude by a physical property, and plenty of native birds you want share that property with the animals you do not. A weight setting that keeps grackles off keeps Northern Cardinals and Blue Jays off too, because they weigh in the same broad range. A 1.5 inch (4 cm) grid that stops a squirrel also stops a cardinal.

You are choosing what to exclude, not buying a better feeder

Both designs work by shutting out a size or weight class. Decide which birds you are prepared to lose before you buy, because that decision is what you are actually making. If cardinals matter to you, a caged feeder is the wrong purchase unless you also run an open feeder elsewhere.

Getting the numbers right#

Two specifications decide whether either design works, and neither is usually printed on the box.

Cage grid and standoff

  • Grid opening about 1.5 inches (4 cm). Small songbirds pass through comfortably. Squirrels, jays, doves, grackles, starlings and cardinals do not.
  • Standoff of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) between the grid and the nearest seed port. Under 2 inches and a squirrel simply reaches an arm through and scoops.
  • Wire gauge heavy enough that it cannot be splayed. Thin wire cages get bent open at one corner and then the whole thing is decorative.
  • A grid of 2 inches (5 cm) is sold as cardinal-friendly. It is, and it is also chipmunk-friendly and reachable by a determined squirrel. Know which trade you are making.

Weight calibration

Setting the dial is the part people get wrong. A gray squirrel weighs roughly 1 to 1.5 lb (450 to 700 g), so a setting anywhere below that excludes squirrels and leaves every North American feeder bird untouched. Set it there and the feeder does its job. The trouble starts when people wind the dial down to shut out grackles, which weigh around 4 oz (115 g). At that setting a cardinal at about 1.6 oz (45 g) is fine, but a jay at roughly 3 oz (85 g) and a Common Grackle are both shut out, and so is any group of birds that lands together. Feeders that flip closed with two chickadees on them are almost always dialed too low.

Do not set the mechanism to trap or startle

Some owners set a mechanism so tight that birds are shut out mid-feed or catch a foot as the shroud drops. Any feeder that closes on a bird's toes is a welfare problem and should be adjusted or retired. Bird welfare outranks squirrel frustration every time.

Who each one is right for#

Weight-activated suits you if

  • You want cardinals, jays and grosbeaks to keep feeding while squirrels are excluded. This is the case where it clearly beats a cage.
  • You feed a large volume and want one main feeder rather than several. Most weight-activated models hold 3 to 6 lb (1.4 to 2.7 kg).
  • Your climate is mild. Fewer ice events means fewer stuck shrouds.
  • You will read the manual and set the dial once, deliberately, rather than winding it to minimum out of frustration.

Caged suits you if

  • You want chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, goldfinches and house finches in peace, and are content to serve larger birds elsewhere.
  • You have both squirrel and blackbird pressure, since one grid solves both, which is the argument in grackles and blackbirds.
  • You feed in a hard winter climate where a mechanism would freeze.
  • You want the cheapest reliable option, or you already own a tube feeder that a retrofit cage will fit around.
  • You want a feeder that gives small birds somewhere to escape when a hawk comes through, which a cage genuinely does.

The cases where the answer flips#

  • Cardinals are the priority. Buy weight-activated, set the dial at about 1 lb (450 g), and accept that grackles will still feed.
  • Starlings and grackles are the priority. Buy caged. A cage handles them without any calibration compromise.
  • You live where ice storms are routine. Buy caged. A frozen shroud either stays open, giving you nothing, or stays shut, which is worse.
  • Chipmunks are the actual problem. Neither design helps much, because chipmunks are too light to trip a mechanism and narrow enough to pass most grids. Chipmunks at feeders covers baffling them out instead.

Notice the ranking. A caged feeder and a baffle together cost less than a weight-activated feeder alone, and the pair works better than the expensive feeder on the wrong pole. If your budget covers one thing, buy the pole and baffle, which is exactly the priority in choosing a squirrel-proof feeder and choosing a pole system. A homemade baffle costs less again.

The verdict#

Buy caged, for most people. There is no mechanism to calibrate, freeze, gum up or wear out, it costs half as much, it solves squirrels and blackbirds with one purchase, and it gives small birds a refuge from hawks. The cost is real: you will not see cardinals, jays or grosbeaks on it, so run an open feeder or a platform elsewhere in the yard for them.

Buy weight-activated when cardinals and jays are part of the point and you are prepared to set the dial at squirrel weight rather than grackle weight. It is the only one of the two that excludes mammals while still serving heavy-bodied birds.

Buy the pole and baffle either way. Both of these designs are second lines of defense, and the honest position is that a plain tube feeder at 5 feet (1.5 m) on a baffled pole with 10 feet (3 m) of clear air around it outperforms either of them hung in the wrong place.

Give any new setup two weeks

Squirrels test a new arrangement persistently at first and then largely give up on the ones that never pay off. Judging a feeder after three days of determined assault tells you nothing. Watch where the squirrel launches from during that fortnight, because that is usually the thing that actually needs fixing.

Mistakes people make with each one#

With weight-activated feeders

  • Winding the dial to minimum. It shuts out cardinals, jays, woodpeckers and any pair of birds landing together, and owners then report that no birds use the feeder.
  • Hanging it from a branch, where a squirrel hangs from above and feeds without loading the perch ring at all.

  • Assuming the warranty covers chewing. Many exclude squirrel damage, and that exclusion tells you what the manufacturer expects.
  • Buying one instead of fixing the placement, which is the most expensive mistake on this page.

With caged feeders

  • Buying a cage with too little standoff. If the grid is within 2 inches (5 cm) of the ports, a squirrel reaches through and empties it.
  • Buying a 2 inch (5 cm) grid to let cardinals in, then wondering why the squirrels are back.
  • Forgetting that the inner tube still needs cleaning. The cage makes it slightly more work, not less, and the cleaning schedule still applies.
  • Filling it with a cheap mix. A caged feeder gives small birds protected access, so it is the right place for good seed such as sunflower hearts.
  • Expecting it to stop house sparrows, which are small enough to pass most grids.

Do squirrel-proof feeders actually work?

Both types work in the right place and neither works in the wrong one. A weight-activated feeder or a caged feeder mounted out of jumping range, on a smooth baffled pole, is very effective. The same feeder hanging from a branch is a puzzle a squirrel will eventually solve, usually by hanging from above or chewing the ports.

What weight should I set a squirrel-proof feeder to?

Around the weight of a gray squirrel, roughly 1 to 1.5 lb (450 to 700 g). At that setting every North American feeder bird can use it, including cardinals, jays and large woodpeckers. Which lasts longer?

The cage, in almost every case. It has no springs, pivots or sliding parts, so there is nothing to seize, weaken or ice up. A welded steel cage with a coated finish will outlive several plastic tubes. Weight-activated mechanisms are typically good for five to ten years depending on climate and cleaning.

Can I use both together?

You can, though it is rarely worth the money. If squirrel pressure is high enough to justify a caged weight-activated feeder, the real problem is almost certainly the mounting position. Spend the money on a taller pole in a more open spot instead, and the ordinary feeder on it will be fine.
