DIY Squirrel Baffle
A homemade baffle costs a fraction of a bought one and works just as well, but only if it is long enough, wide enough, high enough, and free to tilt. Miss any one of those and the squirrel is on the feeder inside a week.
The short answer
- A stovepipe baffle needs to be 15 to 18 inches (38 to 46 cm) long at minimum and 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in diameter. Build it 24 inches (61 cm) long if you can.
- The top of the baffle must sit at least 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 m) off the ground, because a gray squirrel can jump about 4 feet (1.2 m) straight up from a standing start.
- Hang the baffle so it tilts and wobbles. A baffle clamped rigidly to the pole gives a squirrel a fixed edge to grip, and a fixed edge is a ladder rung.
- For hanging feeders, use a rigid dome at least 15 inches (38 cm) across, mounted above the feeder with the feeder hanging close underneath it.
- Never grease or oil a pole. It mats feathers, it wears off in a week, and it does nothing a correctly sized baffle does not do better.
There are two baffles worth building at home. A stovepipe baffle is a length of 6 to 8 inch (15 to 20 cm) galvanized duct pipe, capped at the top, hung loosely on a pole under the feeder so it tips when weight lands on it. A dome baffle is a rigid bowl at least 15 inches (38 cm) across, hung upside down above a hanging feeder.
Both take under an hour. Both fail for exactly the same reasons when people build them small.

Why undersized baffles fail#
A gray squirrel jumps roughly 4 feet (1.2 m) vertically and 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3 m) horizontally, and it climbs a smooth steel pole using opposed grip rather than claws in the surface. Those three numbers decide every dimension below.
A baffle that is too short lets the squirrel keep its hind feet on the pole below the rim while its front feet reach past the top. Fifteen inches (38 cm) is about the point where that stops working. A baffle that is too narrow lets it reach around the outside and hook the upper rim directly. Six inches (15 cm) of diameter is the floor, and 8 inches (20 cm) is noticeably better.
A baffle mounted too low gets jumped over entirely. And a baffle bolted rigidly to the pole is the most common failure of all: a fixed cylinder is just a wide section of pole. The squirrel grips the lower rim, walks its feet up the outside, and pulls itself over the top. The whole trick is that the baffle must tip under its weight and dump it.
The four numbers
Length 15 to 18 inches (38 to 46 cm) minimum. Diameter 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm). Top of the baffle 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 m) off the ground. Free to tilt at least 20 degrees in any direction. A baffle that misses one of these is decoration.

The pipe is sold in 24 inch (61 cm) lengths, which is why the build uses that. If you only have an 18 inch (46 cm) offcut, it will still work. Do not go under 15 inches (38 cm).
The cap needs a center hole about 1/2 to 3/4 inch (13 to 19 mm) larger than the outside diameter of your pole. That slop is not sloppiness. It is the hinge that lets the whole assembly rock.
Tools#
- Aviation snips, for the cap hole and any trimming.
- Drill with a 1/4 inch (6 mm) bit and a 1/8 inch (3 mm) bit, plus a step bit or hole saw if you want a neat cap hole.
- Center punch and hammer.
- Metal file, half-round.
- Tape measure and marker.
- Heavy leather gloves and safety glasses. Cut galvanized sheet is genuinely sharp and the edges are long.
Building the stovepipe baffle#
Allow about 45 minutes.
1. Form the pipe#
Snap the seam closed so the pipe forms a full cylinder. Run a file along the crimped end and the plain end until nothing catches a glove. Any burr left here will eventually meet a bird's foot or your knuckle.
2. Cut the cap hole#
Mark the center of the flat cap. Measure your pole diameter, add 5/8 inch (16 mm), and cut a hole that size with snips working out from a punched starting hole. File the edge smooth and dress it with a wrap of aluminum tape if it still feels rough.
3. Fit the cap#
Slide the cap over the pipe and fix it with three stainless sheet metal screws through 1/8 inch (3 mm) pilot holes. The cap does two jobs: it sheds rain so water does not pool inside, and it carries the entire weight of the baffle on the support pin.
4. Make the support#
Drill a 1/4 inch (6 mm) hole straight through the pole at the height you want the cap to sit. Push the bolt through, add a washer each side, and thread the nut on loosely. The cap rests on that bolt and touches the pole nowhere else.
If drilling the pole is not an option, clamp a stainless hose clamp around it instead and rest the cap on that. The clamp version holds less well on a slick pole, so check it monthly.
5. Check the wobble#
Hang the baffle and push down on one side of the rim. It should tip freely and drop back. If it binds, the cap hole is too tight. Open it up. This step is the difference between a working baffle and an expensive collar.
Never grease the pole
Petroleum jelly, cooking oil, axle grease and spray lubricants all mat the feathers of any bird that brushes them, and matted feathers stop insulating. The coating also washes off in the first rain. Correct geometry is the only humane answer, and it is covered in full in how to stop squirrels raiding feeders.
Mounting height and clearance#
Set the pole so the top of the baffle is 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 m) above the ground and the feeder hangs about 12 inches (30 cm) above the baffle top. Measure from the highest thing a squirrel can launch from, not from the soil. Two feet (60 cm) of settled snow turns a correct installation into a failed one every January.
Then check the horizontal distance. Nothing climbable should be within 10 feet (3 m) in any direction: no fence rail, deck edge, tree limb, trellis, or the garbage can you leave out on collection day. Detailed placement rules are in where to hang a bird feeder and how high should a bird feeder be.
The baffle also has to be under the feeder, not under the pole cap. Raccoons in particular exploit any gap between the baffle top and the feeder base, which is why keeping raccoons off bird feeders recommends the same 4 to 5 foot (1.2 to 1.5 m) mounting with nothing to brace against above it.
The dome baffle for hanging feeders#
A hanging feeder needs a dome above it instead. The requirement is diameter: at least 15 inches (38 cm) across, and 18 inches (46 cm) if you can find a bowl that wide.
Use a rigid plastic bowl, a large planter saucer, or a stainless mixing bowl. Drill a center hole just large enough for your hanging wire or chain, file it smooth, and thread the wire through with a washer above and below so the dome hangs level but is free to tilt. Hang the feeder no more than 6 inches (15 cm) below the dome. A long gap between dome and feeder simply gives a squirrel room to swing through.
Thin flexible plastic domes deform under a squirrel's weight and let it slide over the edge. Press down hard on the center of the bowl before you drill it. If it flexes more than about half an inch (13 mm), pick a stiffer one.
Add the dome to a wire, not to the feeder
Hang the dome on the same wire the feeder hangs from, above the feeder, rather than screwing it to the feeder top. That keeps the dome free to tip and makes the feeder easy to take down for cleaning. Avoid loose loops of string or cord anywhere in the assembly, since a bird can catch a foot in them.
Lifespan and upkeep#
Galvanized stovepipe outdoors runs 5 to 10 years. Rust starts at the crimped end and along the seam, and the first sign is orange staining rather than a hole. A rigid plastic dome gives 3 to 5 seasons before sun makes it brittle. Stainless hardware outlasts both.
Twice a year, check that the cap screws are tight, that the support bolt has not worked loose, and that the baffle still tips freely. Ice can freeze a baffle solid to the pole for days at a time, and a frozen baffle is a rigid one, which is worth knowing during a long cold snap.
Common mistakes to avoid#
- Building it 12 inches (30 cm) long because that is what the offcut measured. Too short.
- Clamping it tight to the pole. No tilt, no baffle.
- Mounting it at 3 feet (0.9 m). A squirrel jumps that from flat ground.
- Using a 4 inch (10 cm) pipe. A squirrel reaches around it.
- Leaving raw cut edges. File everything and dress the rim with tape.
- Putting the baffle on a wooden post. Wood is climbable above and below the baffle. Use smooth steel, as discussed in poles, hooks, trees or deck mounts and choosing a feeder pole system.
- Expecting it to stop chipmunks. They climb differently and are lighter, so the tilt trick works less reliably on them. See chipmunks at the feeder.

Frequently asked questions#
How long does a stovepipe baffle need to be?
At least 15 to 18 inches (38 to 46 cm), and 24 inches (61 cm) is better. A squirrel climbing a pole can reach several inches past the bottom rim with its hind feet still gripping, so a short baffle simply becomes a step. Length is the cheapest part of the build, so overbuild it.
What diameter should a homemade baffle be?
6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) for a stovepipe on a pole, and at least 15 inches (38 cm) across for a dome over a hanging feeder. Anything narrower lets a squirrel reach around the outside and grab the rim. A 4 inch (10 cm) pipe is barely wider than a squirrel's reach and gets defeated routinely.
Why does my baffle not work?
Almost always one of four things: it is too short, too narrow, mounted too low, or bolted on so rigidly that it cannot tip. The fifth possibility is that the squirrel is not climbing the pole at all but jumping in from a fence, branch or roof within about 10 feet (3 m).
Can I make a baffle out of a plastic bucket or a soda bottle?
A 5 gallon (19 L) bucket inverted over the pole works reasonably well and is about 12 inches (30 cm) across, which is wide enough. A soda bottle is not: it is too narrow and too short, and the plastic goes brittle in one season of sun. Smooth every cut edge either way.
How high off the ground should the baffle sit?
The top of the baffle should be 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 m) above the ground, which usually puts the feeder itself around 5.5 to 6 feet (1.7 to 1.8 m). Measure from whatever a squirrel can actually stand on, including snowpack, a raised bed, or the woodpile you moved next to the pole in October.
