Choosing a Feeder Pole System
The pole decides whether your squirrel problem is solved or permanent. It also decides whether the whole station leans in wet ground by March, and whether any baffle on the shelf will fit it.
The short answer
- Check baffle compatibility before anything else. A pole whose diameter no stock baffle fits is the most expensive mistake in backyard bird feeding.
- A smooth powder-coated or galvanized surface with no couplers, joints or set screws below 5 feet (1.5 m) is what a squirrel cannot climb.
- Diameter of about 1 inch (2.5 cm) with a wall thickness around 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) holds several loaded feeders without bending.
- Ground sockets should go 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) deep, or use an auger anchor. Anything shallower leans once the soil is saturated.

The pole is the part of a feeding station people think least about and regret most. It decides whether squirrels are solved permanently or never, whether the station is still upright and level after a wet spring, and, most annoyingly, whether any baffle you can actually buy will fit it.
Baffle compatibility is the thing most people discover too late. Poles get sold on height and number of hooks, and the diameter is often left off the box entirely. Then the baffle arrives, the clamp does not close around the pole, and the only remedy is a second pole.

What you are actually buying#
A pole system does four jobs, and different products are good at different ones.
- It holds weight without bending. A loaded tube feeder weighs 3 to 8 pounds (1.4 to 3.6 kg), and a wet snow load adds more.
- It gives a baffle something to work on. This is the squirrel job, and the pole itself does not do it.
- It sets height and position. Around 5 feet (1.5 m) to the feeder, 10 feet (3 m) from any launch point, per how high should a bird feeder be.
- It stays vertical in saturated soil. Which is a question about the anchor, not the pole.
If you have not decided between a pole, a hook, a tree branch and a deck mount, work through poles, hooks, trees or deck mounts first. The rest of this page assumes a pole is the right answer, which for squirrel control it usually is.
Buy the baffle and the pole together
Or at least buy the pole knowing exactly which baffle you will put on it. Measure the outside diameter, confirm the baffle's stated fit, and check that the pole has no coupler, hook or set screw in the zone where the baffle needs to clamp.
Diameter and wall thickness#
Two numbers, and most product listings give you one at best.
Outside diameter. About 1 inch (2.5 cm) is the practical standard and the size the widest range of baffles is built to clamp. Heavy stations use 1.25 to 1.5 inches (3 to 4 cm) but narrow your baffle options. Anything under 3/4 inch (2 cm) whips in the wind once a feeder is loaded, and the whipping loosens the anchor over a season.
Wall thickness. Rarely stated, always relevant. Around 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) of steel wall carries several feeders comfortably. Thin-wall tubing of half that dents where an arm clamps and eventually kinks. You can judge it by weight: two poles of the same diameter and length that differ noticeably in heft differ in wall thickness.
Sections and couplers. Multi-section poles are convenient to ship and store. Every joint is also a place where a baffle cannot sit and a squirrel can grip. Buy a pole whose lowest section is a continuous 5 feet (1.5 m) or more, and put the joints above the feeder line if you can.
Surface finish, and what a squirrel can grip#
Squirrels climb rough surfaces, painted wood, and anything with a repeating feature to hook a claw into. They also climb smooth steel, just less enthusiastically.

A smooth finish is necessary but not sufficient. Squirrels manage a bare 1 inch (2.5 cm) pole with no baffle in a few seconds. What smoothness does is deny them a grip in the section below a baffle, where a hand-over-hand climb is the only remaining route. Never coat a pole with grease or oil
Petroleum jelly, cooking spray and sticky pest products transfer to feathers, wreck their waterproofing and insulation, and can kill birds outright. There is no version of this that is acceptable. Use a physical baffle.
Ground anchors: depth, type and soil#
Almost every leaning feeder station is an anchor problem.
Straight ground sockets are the common design: a spike or sleeve you drive in, with the pole sliding into it. Depth is what matters. 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) holds in normal loam. In sand, loose fill or freshly landscaped beds, go deeper or switch types.
Auger anchors thread into the soil like a screw. At the same depth they resist pull-out and side load far better, which matters for a multi-arm station. They also come out again when you want to move the station, which straight spikes often do not.
Freeze and thaw lifts anchors slowly over winter. Expect to reseat a pole every spring in the northern half of the country, and check for lean after every heavy rain.
Skip concrete unless the station is large and permanent. Most people move a feeder at least once in the first year, usually because of a window strike issue or because the birds are sitting in the wrong shrub, and moving a feeder without losing the birds is much easier with a socket.
Arm loading and how many feeders#
Arms fail by bending at the pole, not at the hook. Two things drive that: total weight and arm length.

Balance opposing arms rather than loading one side, keep arms as short as the feeders allow, and remember that a 12 inch (30 cm) arm doubles the bending moment of a 6 inch (15 cm) one at the same weight. Layout options are in building a complete feeding station.
Check lean with a level, not by eye
A pole that looks straight from the kitchen window is often 3 or 4 degrees off, and a leaning pole gives squirrels a diagonal to run up. Put a small level on it each spring, straighten it, and tamp the soil back around the socket.
Baffle compatibility, in detail#
Baffles come in three shapes and each has a different fit requirement.
Torpedo and stovepipe baffles slide over the pole and clamp with a collar or bracket sized for a specific diameter. They must sit at 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 m) and tilt or wobble when pushed, which means nothing rigid can be attached just above them.
Wraparound and dome baffles have a center hole. Check that the hole matches your pole diameter and that any hook or arm above it can pass through during installation, or that the baffle splits open.
Squirrel-specific cone baffles need a clear pole surface for at least 18 inches (45 cm) below them, with no couplers, hose clamps or spare hooks that a squirrel can stand on to reach past the baffle.

How people buy the wrong pole#
- Buying a pole with no stated diameter. Then discovering no baffle clamps to it.
- Choosing a decorative shepherd's hook for a squirrel problem. Thin, curved, textured, often under 1/2 inch (1.3 cm), and it bends under two feeders.
- Driving the socket in too shallow. It holds fine in August and leans in March.
- Hanging everything on one arm. The pole bows toward the load and never comes back.
- Choosing a wood post for looks. Squirrels climb it, baffles do not fit it, and it rots at the soil line.
- Placing the pole before measuring clearance. 10 feet (3 m) from fences, branches, roof edges and deck rails, measured with a tape and not estimated.
Get the diameter, the anchor and the baffle fit right and the rest of the station is easy to change later. Get them wrong and every other decision you make about feeders, including a squirrel-proof mechanism, is compensating for the pole.
Frequently asked questions#
What diameter should a bird feeder pole be?
About 1 inch (2.5 cm) outside diameter for most setups, which is also the size the widest range of baffles is built for. Heavy multi-arm stations use 1.25 to 1.5 inches (3 to 4 cm). Below about 3/4 inch (2 cm) a loaded pole flexes visibly in wind and bends where the arms attach.
How deep should a bird feeder pole go into the ground?
12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) for a ground socket in normal soil, deeper in sand or loose fill. An auger-style anchor threaded 12 inches (30 cm) down holds better than a straight spike of the same length. If the pole leans after heavy rain, the anchor is too short, not the pole too heavy.
Why does my baffle not fit my feeder pole?
Because baffles are made for specific pole diameters, and many poles are sold without stating theirs. A wraparound or torpedo baffle needs to clamp on a pole of the right size, and a dome baffle needs a center hole that matches. Measure the pole diameter with calipers or a tape before you buy either part.
How many feeders can one pole hold?
Two to four on a 1 inch (2.5 cm) pole, if the arms are short and the loads are balanced. A full feeder weighs 3 to 8 pounds (1.4 to 3.6 kg), and a long arm multiplies that leverage at the pole. Balance loads across opposite sides rather than hanging everything on one arm.
Should I set a feeder pole in concrete?
Usually not. Concrete makes the pole permanent, and feeder placement is something most people revise in the first year. A deep ground socket or auger anchor holds well enough and lets you move the station. Concrete makes sense only for a large multi-arm station in loose soil.
Do I need a baffle if my pole is smooth?
Yes. Squirrels climb smooth metal poles easily, especially thinner ones. Smoothness buys you nothing on its own; it matters because a smooth pole gives a baffle nothing to be defeated around. The baffle is the part that stops the climb.
