Choosing a Suet Feeder

A suet feeder is a wire box that has to survive weather, woodpecker claws and a determined raccoon. Three details decide whether it lasts a decade or a winter.

The short answer

  • Look at the wire first: heavier gauge with a vinyl coating resists rust, and the coating keeps tongues and feet off bare metal in freezing weather.
  • A tail prop, meaning a 6 to 8 inch (15 to 20 cm) vertical extension below the cage, is what brings in flickers, hairy woodpeckers and pileateds.
  • An upside-down suet feeder, where birds feed from underneath, excludes starlings almost completely while woodpeckers, chickadees and nuthatches adapt in days.
  • Single-cake capacity suits most yards. Double and quad cages are for high woodpecker traffic, not for saving trips outside.
  • This site does not rank suet feeders. Wire gauge, prop length and closure type are checkable in a store, and they outlast any model list.

A suet feeder looks like the simplest thing you can buy for a yard, which is why people buy the wrong one. The cheap wire cage at the end of the aisle rusts through by its second spring, sheds its coating, and cannot be locked against a raccoon.

Three details decide the outcome: the wire itself, whether the design has a tail prop, and whether birds feed from the side or from underneath. Capacity is a fourth, and it is where most people over-buy.

What you are buying a suet feeder to do#

Suet is high-fat food for birds that eat insects and cling to bark. That defines the audience and it should define the purchase.

  • Woodpeckers, from the downy up through the red-bellied and the northern flicker. The larger species need a tail prop.
  • Nuthatches, chickadees and titmice, which cling happily to any grid and need nothing special.
  • Carolina wrens, kinglets and warblers in winter, which take suet crumbs from a cage.

What you are usually trying to exclude is the European starling, which arrives in flocks and empties a cake in an afternoon. Almost every design decision below is downstream of one of those two goals: get the woodpeckers, lose the starlings.

The three criteria that decide quality#

1. Wire gauge and coating. Pick the cage up. A heavy cage that holds its shape when you squeeze it is made of thick wire; a flimsy one is not, and its welds will fail where the hinge flexes. Then look at the coating. Vinyl-coated wire resists rust and, importantly, prevents skin and tongue contact with bare freezing metal. Uncoated cages rust from the weld points outward and stain whatever they hang above.

2. The closure. Suet cages fail at the lid more than anywhere else. A hinged top with a metal locking clip or a spot to clip a carabiner defeats raccoons. A lid held shut by its own weight, or a slide-out panel that a shake dislodges, does not. This is the single most overlooked spec, and it is why some people find the cage on the ground and empty, a scenario in keeping raccoons off bird feeders.

3. Grid spacing that fits a standard cake. Nearly all suet cakes are about 5 by 5 by 1.25 inches (13 by 13 by 3 cm). A cage sized for that holds the cake snugly so it cannot rattle loose. A grid opening around 1 inch (2.5 cm) lets birds reach the suet while making it hard for a squirrel or starling to tear off a chunk and carry it away.

Why cheap suet cages fail

The wire is thin, the coating is thin, and the two meet at spot welds that flex every time a woodpecker lands. Water gets under the coating at the weld, rust spreads outward, and the cage opens at a corner. You can predict this in the store by squeezing the cage.

Tail props, and who actually needs one#

A tail prop is a flat vertical extension below the cage, typically 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) long. Woodpeckers brace their stiff tail feathers against a trunk when they feed, and larger species cannot feed comfortably without something to push against.

That last row is the tradeoff. A tail prop makes a feeder more usable for large woodpeckers and somewhat more usable for starlings. If you want flickers and pileateds, accept it and manage starlings another way. Attracting the larger species is covered in how to attract woodpeckers.

Upside-down designs and the starling question#

An upside-down suet feeder puts the access grid on the underside, so a bird has to hang inverted to feed. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees and titmice do that routinely. Starlings are heavier, less agile hanging upside down, and largely give up.

It is not perfect. Some individual starlings work it out, and your regular woodpeckers may take three or four days to try it. Give it a week before deciding it has failed. Other tactics are in keeping starlings off feeders.

The other exclusion approach is a cage around the suet cage, with grid openings around 1.5 inches (4 cm) standing 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) off the suet. That stops starlings, grackles and squirrels alike, at the cost of excluding the larger woodpeckers you may have wanted. The same logic applies as in caged and selective feeders.

Buy two single cages, not one double

Two single cages hung 10 feet (3 m) apart give two woodpeckers room to feed without conflict, keep both cakes fresher, and let you clean one while the other stays out. A double cage concentrates the traffic and the mess in one place, and it takes twice as long to empty.

Capacity, and why bigger is usually worse#

Suet is animal fat. Above about 70°F (21°C) ordinary suet softens and starts to go rancid, and it can smear on breast feathers. No-melt cakes, which are rendered and mixed with flour or cornmeal, tolerate more heat but not indefinite exposure.

A single cake typically lasts anywhere from three days in a yard with three woodpeckers to two weeks in a quiet one. Measure yours for a month before deciding you need more capacity. If a cake regularly sits for over two weeks, buy a smaller cage or split cakes in half.

In summer, either switch to no-melt cakes or take the suet down, and read summer bird feeding for the regional timing.

Never use plastic mesh onion bags for suet

Loose mesh catches feet and tongues, and birds have been injured by the netting some suet products ship in. Remove the cake from its wrapper and put it in a proper cage. The same applies to any homemade holder with loose strands, which is worth remembering if you build a suet log feeder.

Tradeoffs where reasonable people differ#

Prop or no prop. More large woodpeckers, more starling access. If flickers matter to you, take the prop and use safflower and no-melt cakes to blunt starling interest.

Upside-down or standard. Upside-down solves starlings but reduces casual visits from species that prefer feeding upright, and it is harder to load. If you have no starlings, a standard cage is simpler.

Coated wire or stainless. Vinyl coating is better on a cold morning; stainless never rusts even where the coating splits. Both are defensible; both beat plain galvanized wire that has begun to flake.

How people buy the wrong suet feeder#

  1. Buying the flimsiest cage available. Suet cages are inexpensive enough that the heavy one is barely a stretch, and it lasts five times longer.
  2. Ignoring the lid. Then finding the cage in the neighbor's yard.
  3. Buying a quad cage for a yard with one downy woodpecker. Rancid suet, more cleaning, no extra birds.
  4. Hanging it from a low branch. Raccoons and squirrels reach it. A pole with a baffle, sized per baffles: types, sizing and placement, fixes it.
  5. Assuming any cage excludes starlings. Only the upside-down design or an outer cage does.
  6. Leaving ordinary suet out in July. Switch to no-melt or take it down.
