Nearly every feeder problem is misdiagnosed before it is mistreated. Start with the evidence on the ground, then pick the fix that matches the animal.

Most feeder problems are solved backward. People buy a squirrel-proof feeder for a raccoon, or a baffle for a deer, and stay frustrated for a season. Start with the evidence instead. Each culprit leaves a different pattern on the feeder, the pole and the ground beneath.

Read the symptom, find the culprit#

Read the ground before you buy anything#

The ground under a feeder is the best evidence you have. A neat cone of empty hulls means birds are feeding normally. Whole seed scattered wide means something is raking rather than eating, which is a squirrel or a bird working through filler in a cheap mix. Tracks in mud or snow settle most arguments outright, and a raccoon's five-toed hand print is unmistakable.

Timing narrows it further. Squirrels, chipmunks, jays and blackbirds work in daylight. Raccoons, rats, flying squirrels and deer work after dark. Bears work whenever they like, which is why they get their own rules, and in some states their own feeding laws.

What most people get wrong#

Reaching for hardware before geometry. A squirrel-proof feeder hanging from a branch will be defeated; a plain feeder on a smooth pole 5 feet (1.5 m) up and 10 feet (3 m) from any launch point usually is not. Fix the position first, using feeder placement and setup, then decide whether you still need the mechanism.

Trying to out-compete a bird you cannot exclude. Grackles, starlings and House Sparrows do not respond to more seed or a bigger feeder. They respond to a food they dislike and an opening they do not fit through. Switching to safflower, removing millet and cracked corn, and fitting a caged feeder solves more bully-bird cases than anything else.

When the problem is health, not pests#

Some feeder problems are not about animals taking food. A bird that sits fluffed and does not flush, crusted or swollen eyes, or several dead birds in a week are signs of disease spreading at your feeder rather than a pest. The response is the same in every case: take the feeders down, clean thoroughly, rake the spill, and wait two weeks. The full protocol is in cleaning, health and safety.
