Where to Hang a Bird Feeder
Placement decides whether a feeder is found in two days or ignored for two months. Four measurements do most of the work, and they pull against each other.
The short answer
- Hang a feeder 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from cover: close enough for a fast escape, far enough that a cat cannot pounce from the shrub.
- Keep glass either under 3 feet (1 m) or over 30 feet (9 m) away. The middle distances are where birds build up lethal speed.
- Mount on a baffled pole 5 feet (1.5 m) up and 10 feet (3 m) horizontally from any branch, roof or fence a squirrel can jump from.
- Morning sun and afternoon shade is the ideal, because heat and damp spoil seed faster than birds eat it.
- If you cannot see the feeder from a window you use daily, you will stop filling it by midwinter.
Hang a feeder 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from the nearest shrub or tree, 5 feet (1.5 m) off the ground on a baffled pole, and either under 3 feet (1 m) or over 30 feet (9 m) from the nearest pane of glass. If you do nothing else, do that.
Everything below is the reasoning behind those numbers, because yards rarely cooperate. A city lot may have no spot 30 feet from a window. A wooded lot may have no spot 10 feet from a branch. Knowing which constraint matters most lets you trade sensibly instead of guessing.

Cover: the 10 to 12 foot rule#
Small birds do not linger in the open. A black-capped chickadee grabs one seed, carries it to a branch, wedges it, and hammers it open. That round trip happens dozens of times an hour, so the distance between feeder and branch is the single number that governs how comfortable a bird feels at your feeder.
Too far and the crossing is exposed. Feeders stranded in the middle of a lawn, 30 or 40 feet (9 to 12 m) from anything, get found late and used lightly, mostly by bold species like house sparrows and doves.
Too close and the shrub becomes a hunting blind. A cat crouched under a yew needs about 6 feet (1.8 m) to launch a successful ambush, which is why the recommendation is 10 feet rather than 5. The same margin gives a bird an extra half second of warning against an accipiter, the ambush hunter described in hawks hunting at your feeder.
Ten to 12 feet is the compromise: a one to two second flight for a chickadee, and no useful cover for anything stalking it.

What counts as cover, and what does not#
Cover means woody structure a small bird can disappear into: an evergreen, a dense hedge, a thicket, a brush pile. Structure matters more than height. A 4 foot (1.2 m) juniper is better cover than a 40 foot (12 m) maple with a bare trunk and a high canopy.
A lawn is not cover. A fence is not cover. A single ornamental tree with a clean trunk gives a bird nowhere to go at ground level, which is exactly where a cat is.
Build cover if you do not have it
A brush pile of prunings, 4 feet (1.2 m) high and 6 feet (1.8 m) across, sited 10 feet from the feeder, transforms an empty yard within a season. It costs nothing and gives juncos and sparrows somewhere to go. Native plantings do the same job permanently.
Sightlines: the bird's view and the predator's#
Birds queue. Watch a busy feeder and you will see most of the flock sitting in a staging tree, dropping in one or two at a time. That staging perch needs a clear view of the feeder, so avoid siting a feeder where a fence or wall blocks the approach from the direction the birds arrive.
At the same time, keep low horizontal cover out of the ambush arc. The problem spot is dense growth at ground level within about 6 feet (1.8 m), especially on the side you cannot see from the house. Sun, shade and seed that stays edible#
Morning sun, afternoon shade. Birds feed hardest in the first two hours after sunrise, when they have burned the night's reserves, and an east-facing feeder warms and dries first.
Afternoon shade matters for the seed. Sunflower is oily, and heat turns oil rancid. A feeder baking on a south-facing wall all summer can spoil a seed column in under two weeks, which is the quiet cause of a full feeder nobody visits. The same heat softens suet and accelerates the damp-clump cycle described in moldy, clumped or wet seed.
Deep shade all day is the other failure mode: the feeder never dries between rains.
Wind and the swinging feeder#
A feeder that swings wildly in wind gets abandoned. Birds will tolerate slight movement, but a tube spinning on a hook in a 20 mph gust is unusable, and it flings seed.
Two fixes. Site the feeder on the leeward side of the house, garage or a hedge so it sits in the wind shadow. And orient the feeding ports away from the prevailing wind, which in most of North America means facing them east or southeast. Wind-driven rain enters through windward ports and soaks the whole column, no matter what the lid looks like.
Hummingbird feeders deserve extra shelter, since wind sloshes nectar out through the ports.
Windows: two zones, one dangerous middle#
Glass is the one placement decision with a body count. The rule is that a feeder should be either under 3 feet (1 m) from the window or over 30 feet (9 m) away.
Very close works because a startled bird leaving a feeder 2 feet from glass simply cannot accelerate to an injurious speed in that distance. It bumps and flies off. Far away works because a bird 30 feet out has room to read the reflection as something other than open sky, and because a panicked flush is less likely to end at the house.
The distances in between, roughly 5 to 25 feet (1.5 to 7.5 m), are where a flushing bird reaches full speed with a mirrored hedge in front of it. Full reasoning, plus the treatments that matter more than placement, is in feeders and windows.
Placement alone does not solve window strikes

The ground under the feeder#
Whatever you hang, a share of it ends up below. Hulls smother grass, sprouting seed becomes weeds, and spilled grain draws rodents.
Site the feeder over a planting bed, gravel, or a patch of lawn you do not care about, rather than over a prized border or right beside a patio door. The view from your chair#
The most common reason feeders go empty in February is not squirrels. It is that the owner cannot see the feeder from anywhere they spend time, so refilling never becomes a habit.
Pick the window you use most: kitchen sink, desk, breakfast table. Put the feeder in that sightline first, then adjust for cover and glass distance within that arc. A feeder in a slightly imperfect spot you watch daily will outperform a textbook installation around the side of the house.
Aim for a viewing distance of 15 to 25 feet (4.5 to 7.5 m) if you can, since that is close enough to identify a house finch without binoculars and far enough that your movement inside does not flush the birds.
If you have to compromise
Rank the constraints in this order: window safety first, because it is the only one that kills birds. Then cover distance, because it decides whether birds come at all. Then squirrel geometry, then sun, then wind, then your view.
A placement that works#
- A steel pole in open lawn, 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from a shrub or hedge.
- Feeder hook at 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 m), with a baffle below it, and nothing jumpable within 10 feet (3 m). The height reasoning is in how high a feeder should be.
- Ports facing east, in morning sun and afternoon shade.
- More than 30 feet (9 m) from the nearest large window, or right against a small one.
- In view of a window you stand at every day.

How far should a bird feeder be from a tree?
About 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from the nearest branch or shrub. That gives small birds a two second dash to safety while leaving a cat no ambush point and a squirrel no jumping platform. Squirrels can clear roughly 10 feet horizontally, so anything closer turns the tree into a launch pad.
Should a bird feeder be in sun or shade?
Morning sun and afternoon shade. Early sun dries dew off the feeder and gets birds feeding at their hungriest hour, while shade through the hottest part of the day slows the rancidity of oily seed and stops suet from melting. Deep shade all day keeps the feeder damp and encourages mold.
Can I hang a bird feeder from a tree branch?
You can, but expect squirrels. A branch is a squirrel highway, and no hanging baffle fully compensates unless the branch is high, bare for several feet on either side, and at least 10 feet (3 m) from the trunk. A freestanding pole with a baffle is far more reliable.
Why are no birds coming to my new feeder?
