Poles, Hooks, Trees or Deck Mounts

The feeder gets the attention and the mount decides the outcome. Only one common mounting method is genuinely defensible against squirrels, and it is not the one most people buy first.

The short answer

  • A smooth steel pole set in open ground is the only mount that reliably takes a baffle and defeats squirrels.
  • Shepherd's hooks fail on three counts: too thin for most baffles to grip, too short once the feeder hangs, and easily bent or leaned over.
  • Hanging from a tree branch is a squirrel feeder with extra steps unless the branch is high, bare and 10 feet (3 m) from the trunk.
  • Deck and railing mounts need an arm long enough to put the feeder 10 feet (3 m) from any jumping-off point, which most arms are not.
  • Set poles in a driven ground socket or auger, not concrete, so you can move the whole setup when you get the placement wrong.

The mount matters more than the feeder. A well-designed feeder on a tree branch will be emptied by squirrels; a plain tube on a baffled steel pole will not. Everything about placement, height, baffle fit and stability is decided by what you hang the feeder from.

There are five common options: a freestanding pole, a shepherd's hook, a tree branch, a deck or railing mount, and a wall or window bracket. Only one of them scores well on every measure.

What a mount has to do#

Four jobs, in order of how often they are botched.

  1. Accept a baffle. The baffle needs a straight vertical section of the right diameter, with the feeder above it and nothing to bypass it. Most failures start here.
  2. Hold position. A feeder that swings hard in wind, or a pole that leans over one winter, changes all your careful distances.
  3. Put the feeder where you want it. Ten to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from cover, 10 feet (3 m) from any launch point, at the right height.
  4. Let you refill and clean it easily. A mount you cannot reach is a feeder you will not clean.

Freestanding poles#

This is the mount that works. A smooth steel pole, typically 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter or a little more, driven into open ground, holds the feeder at a height you choose and gives a stovepipe or torpedo baffle a clean surface to sit on.

Two details separate a pole that works from one that does not. The first is surface: powder-coated or polished steel is hard for a squirrel to grip, while a textured, rusted or wood pole gives claws something to hold. The second is wall thickness, since a thin-walled tube dents where the baffle bracket clamps and eventually sags under a loaded feeder.

Set the pole in a driven ground socket or a screw-in auger anchor, 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) deep, deeper in sandy or loose soil. Avoid concrete. Concrete feels permanent and reassuring, and then you discover the feeder is 15 feet from a picture window or too close to the fence, and you cannot move it.

Check plumb every spring

Frost heave lifts poles, and the ground softens in spring rain. A pole that leans 10 degrees drops the baffle several inches and tilts it, which is enough for a squirrel to get a grip on the rim. Re-seat it and re-measure before the season starts.

Shepherd's hooks#

The default garden-center purchase, and the weakest of the five.

The rod on a typical hook is around half an inch (13 mm) thick. Squirrels climb it like a vine, and few baffles clamp to something that thin without slipping down under a squirrel's weight. The curve costs you height as well: a hook advertised at 7 feet (2.1 m) commonly holds the feeder base at about 5 feet (1.5 m), within a squirrel's standing jump.

They also lean. A hook with a single spike is holding a swinging weight in wind and wet soil, and by February it is at an angle with the feeder resting against a shrub.

Hooks are fine for a hummingbird feeder, a temporary summer setup, or a spot where squirrels genuinely are not present. For a year-round seed feeder, spend the difference on a pole.

Hanging from a tree#

Hanging a feeder from a branch solves the installation problem and creates the squirrel problem. Squirrels approach from above, and no baffle mounted below a hanging feeder helps with an animal coming down the hanging wire.

If a tree is all you have, the geometry from the 5-7-9 rule still applies, just rotated. Hang from a limb at least 9 feet (2.7 m) above the feeder, keep the feeder 10 feet (3 m) out from the trunk and from any other branch, and put a wide dome baffle immediately above the feeder on the same wire. A length of smooth wire rather than chain helps, since squirrels grip chain links easily.

Expect it to work some of the time. A determined gray squirrel will drop from surprising heights onto a feeder it can see.

Do not run wire around a living trunk

Wire, cable and rope left around a trunk or limb girdle the tree as it grows, killing the branch or the whole tree over a few years. Use a hanging strap over the limb, or better, move the feeder to a pole.

Deck and railing mounts#

Deck mounts trade squirrel resistance for a close view, and for many people that is a reasonable deal.

The problem is the rail. A railing is a broad, level, elevated launch pad, and standard clamp-on arms extend 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 cm), which puts the feeder well inside jumping range. Squirrels do not need to climb anything.

If you use one, choose the longest arm you can find, mount it at a corner so the approach angles are limited, and accept that a caged or weight-activated feeder may be a better answer than a baffle. Hulls, droppings and spilled seed land on the deck, so a catch tray under the feeder is close to mandatory: see seed mess, hulls and dead grass.

One variation is worth knowing: a pole clamped to the outside of the deck and running down to the ground, with the feeder held above rail height, converts a deck mount back into a pole mount. It takes a proper baffle, and it moves the mess off the decking.

Deck mounts do suit suet feeders reasonably well, since suet is less attractive to squirrels than sunflower and the mess is minimal.

Wall brackets, window mounts and no-ground options#

Where there is no ground to sink a pole into, a wall bracket or a suction-cup window feeder is the realistic choice. Both are stable, both are easy to reach, and neither takes a baffle.

Window mounts have a genuine safety advantage: at under 3 feet (1 m) from the glass, a startled bird has no room to build up speed, which is the reasoning in feeders and windows. Their drawback is cleaning frequency, since they are small, shallow and sit in whatever sun the wall gets.

Choosing a mount for your yard#

  • Open lawn: steel pole with a stovepipe baffle. No contest.
  • Wooded lot with no open ground: long wire from a high limb, wide dome baffle above the feeder, feeder well out from the trunk.
  • Deck or patio, squirrels present: longest available arm, caged feeder, catch tray below.
  • Balcony or apartment: wall bracket or window mount, under 3 feet (1 m) from the glass.
  • Renting, or unsure of the spot: pole in an auger anchor. You can pull it and move it in five minutes.

Frequently asked questions#

Is a pole or a hanging feeder better?

A pole is better in almost every case. A pole gives you control over height, distance from cover and baffle placement, while a hanging feeder inherits whatever geometry the branch or bracket happens to have. Hanging is only preferable where you have no ground to work with, such as a balcony or a paved yard.

Why do squirrels get past shepherd's hooks?

Two reasons. The rod is usually about half an inch thick, so squirrels grip and climb it easily and most baffles will not clamp to it securely. And the curve of the hook drops the feeder about a foot below the top, so a hook sold as 7 feet often puts the feeder around 5 feet, within jumping range from the ground.

Can I hang a bird feeder from a tree?

Yes, but expect to feed squirrels. Squirrels descend a branch and drop onto a feeder from above, which a pole baffle cannot help with. If a tree is your only option, use a long wire, keep the feeder at least 10 feet (3 m) out from the trunk and well below the branch, and add a wide dome baffle directly above it.

How deep should a bird feeder pole go into the ground?
