Winter Bird Feeding
Winter is the season your feeder matters most and the season it is hardest to run well. Fat is the currency, water is the shortage nobody plans for, and the birds feed hardest at the two ends of the day.
The short answer
- Feed high-fat foods in winter: suet, black oil sunflower, sunflower hearts and peanuts. Volume matters less than calories per beakful.
- Open water is often harder for birds to find than food once temperatures stay below freezing. A heated bath will out-perform a third feeder.
- Birds feed hardest in the first hour after dawn and the last hour before dark. Those are the two fills that count.
- Reliability helps most during storms and cold snaps, but wild birds are not helpless without you. A feeder is a supplement, not a life-support system.
- Roosting cover, a brush pile and dense evergreens do as much for winter survival as anything you put in a feeder.
In winter, feed fat. Suet, black oil sunflower, sunflower hearts and peanuts are the four foods that carry a North American yard from November to March, and they work because they are energy-dense rather than because birds prefer them. A small songbird can burn most of its fat reserves overnight and has to rebuild them the next day, every day.
The second thing to know is that water, not food, is the resource most likely to be missing. Once daytime temperatures stay below 32°F (0°C), every puddle, birdbath and shallow creek edge in the neighborhood closes, while seeds and berries are still out there somewhere.

Why fat is the winter currency#
A chickadee weighs about as much as four pennies. On a 10°F (-12°C) night it shivers for fourteen hours to stay alive, and shivering runs on fat. Birds that cannot put on enough fat during the short daylight hours do not make it to morning.
That is why fat content, not seed volume, is the right way to judge winter food. A pound of pure suet carries roughly twice the usable energy of a pound of cracked corn, and the bird spends less time exposed getting it. Milo, wheat and the filler in cheap seed mixes are close to worthless in January.
The corollary is that shell weight counts against you. Whole black oil sunflower is excellent, but a bird handling it spends time and heat cracking each seed. Sunflower hearts deliver the same kernel with no work, which matters most in the coldest weather and on the shortest days.

The winter shopping list
One suet feeder, one sunflower feeder, one ground or platform tray, and open water. That combination covers roughly every species a typical yard can attract in winter. Everything else is refinement.
Water is the winter shortage#
Birds need drinking water year round, and they need bathing water more than people expect in cold weather. Clean, well-arranged feathers trap air, and trapped air is the insulation that keeps a bird alive overnight. A grubby bird is a cold bird.
Eating snow works but costs body heat to melt, which is energy a bird would rather spend shivering. Open water in a freezing yard pulls in species that never touch a feeder, including robins, bluebirds and waxwings.
Use a heated bath or a submersible heater rated for outdoor use, keep the water shallow at 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm), and put a few stones in the basin so small birds can stand rather than wade. Do not use salt or glycerin to stop ice
Both are sometimes suggested online. Salt is toxic to birds in the quantities needed and dehydrates them. Glycerin and similar substances coat feathers and destroy their insulating structure, which in freezing weather is fatal. A heater or a daily kettle of warm water is the only safe answer.
Cover, roosting and the shape of the yard#
A feeder in an open lawn 60 feet (18 m) from the nearest branch gets used cautiously and abandoned in wind. Winter birds want an escape route within a couple of wingbeats and a windbreak to sit out the worst of the weather.
Aim for feeders about 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from a shrub or tree, which is the same distance recommended in where to hang a bird feeder. Close enough to dash for, far enough that a cat cannot ambush from inside the cover.
Then give them somewhere to sleep. Dense evergreens are the classic winter roost. A brush pile built from your own prunings does the same job in a yard with no conifers, and it costs nothing. Chickadees, titmice and wrens will also use nest boxes as winter roosts if you leave the boxes up, which is a good argument against cleaning them out in fall.
Feeding through a winter storm#
Weather forecasts are a bird-feeding tool. Birds feed heavily ahead of a front, again at first light, and again in the last hour of daylight.
The routine that works:
- The evening before. Top every feeder to the brim and refill the suet cages. Overnight snow can bury a partly full tray.
- First light. Refill again. Clear snow off perches, ports and tray surfaces.
- Midday. Sweep or shovel a bare patch of ground under a feeder and scatter seed there for the ground feeders.
- Last hour of daylight. One more check, because that final feed is what a bird carries through the night.

The late-winter point surprises people. By February and March the fall seed and berry crop has been picked over for months and insects have not returned. If you plan to run feeders for only part of the year, this is the stretch worth committing to.
Do birds become dependent on your feeder?#
This is the most common winter worry, and the evidence is reassuring without being a blank check. Work on chickadees and other feeder-using songbirds has repeatedly found that birds continue to forage naturally alongside feeders and do not lose that ability when feeders are removed. Feeders typically supply a modest share of daily intake rather than all of it.
What feeders do change is efficiency. A reliable food source means fewer wasted searching trips in bad weather, which is a real benefit at the margins during a cold snap. That argues for keeping your feeder stocked when the weather is genuinely severe, and for not panicking when you go away for a weekend.

Winter feeder problems worth planning for#
Cold weather changes the failure modes. Seed gets wet during a thaw and freezes into a solid plug overnight, so tube bases and hopper trays need checking rather than topping up blindly. Snow loads a platform tray in an hour. Suet turns rock-hard, which is fine for woodpeckers and awkward for chickadees, so a mixed offering helps.
Large winter flocks also mean crowding, and crowding spreads disease. Concentrated finches are the classic risk, which is why salmonella outbreaks tend to make the news in winter. Clean roughly monthly in dry cold and more often during thaws, and take feeders down for a week or two if you see sick birds.
Hawks follow the flocks. A sharp-shinned or Cooper's hawk hunting your feeder is a sign the station is working, not a problem to solve, though moving feeders closer to dense cover reduces the hit rate.
Watch the last hour of daylight
If you only have time to check feeders once a day, do it in the late afternoon. A feeder filled at 4 p.m. is full for the dusk feeding rush and full again at dawn, which are the two moments that decide whether a small bird has enough fat to get through the night.
A winter setup that works#
- Suet feeder against a tree trunk or on a pole, restocked whenever it drops below half.
- Sunflower tube or hopper on a baffled pole, 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from cover.
- Ground or low platform tray with millet and cracked corn, swept clear of snow daily.
- Heated water, shallow, with stones, checked every morning.
