Winter Water and Heated Bird Baths

Once temperatures stay below freezing, drinking water is harder for birds to find than food. A heated bath is the highest-value thing most yards are missing in January.

The short answer

  • Open water in a frozen landscape draws more birds, and more species, than adding a third feeder. Many birds that never eat seed will still come to drink.
  • A bath heater or de-icer keeps water liquid rather than warm. Typical units run roughly 50 to 250 watts depending on bath size and how cold your winters are.
  • Run any heater on a GFCI-protected outdoor circuit with an outdoor-rated cord. This is the one part of winter bird care with a real electrical hazard.
  • Never add antifreeze, salt, glycerin or any other additive to a bird bath. All of them are harmful, and salt and glycerin damage feathers.
  • Keep the water shallow, about 2 inches (5 cm) at the deepest, so birds can drink without soaking themselves in freezing conditions.

Once temperatures stay below freezing, open water is scarcer than food. Seed heads, berries, bark insects and your feeders are all still there under the snow. Puddles, ponds and stream edges are not.

Why birds need water when everything is frozen#

Birds lose water continuously through respiration and droppings, and a dry winter diet of seed and suet does not replace it. Snow works as a fallback, but melting it costs body heat that a small bird can barely spare on a short December day.

Feathers matter too. Clean, well-preened feathers trap air and insulate, and preening depends on the bird getting properly wet from time to time. A winter bird with dirty, matted feathers is a colder bird, which is why bathing in freezing weather is not the folly it appears.

One bath beats a third feeder

If you are deciding where to spend money in November, open water is the addition that changes your yard most. It brings in species your feeders never will, and in a hard freeze it is the scarcest resource in the neighborhood.

What a heater actually does#

A bird bath heater, or de-icer, does not warm the water. It keeps it just above freezing. Most have a thermostat and only draw power when the water approaches 32°F (0°C), so the running cost is far lower than the wattage rating suggests.

There are two forms. A heated bird bath has the element built into the basin, which is tidier and harder to knock loose. A drop-in de-icer is a separate unit you place in an existing bath, which lets you keep the bath you already have. Either works. The built-in version usually looks better and the drop-in is cheaper to replace when it fails.

How much wattage you need#

Wattage tracks basin size and winter severity. Overrating slightly is better than underrating: a unit that cannot keep up freezes over, and once ice forms it rarely recovers until you break it out.

Two details worth checking before you buy. Confirm the unit is thermostatically controlled, which almost all modern ones are, and confirm it is rated for dry-run protection or otherwise safe if the bath empties. A heater running in an empty basin is a fire and cracking risk.

Electrical safety#

This is the part of winter bird care with an actual hazard attached, and it is worth being strict about.

  • Use a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. If you do not have one, a GFCI adapter is the minimum, and a properly installed exterior outlet is better.
  • Use an outdoor-rated extension cord sized for the load, not an indoor cord run out through a window.
  • Keep connections off the ground and out of standing water and snow. A drip loop, where the cord hangs below the connection, keeps water from running into the joint.
  • Inspect the cord each fall for cracking, chew damage and corroded pins.
  • Do not run a heater on a dimmer or a timer unless the manufacturer says so.

Never add anything to the water

Antifreeze is lethal, and even a small amount of ethylene glycol will kill a bird. Salt harms birds internally and strips the natural oils from feathers, ruining their insulation. Glycerin, which circulates as a folk remedy, coats feathers and does the same thing. There is no safe chemical way to stop a bird bath freezing. Use a heater or carry out warm water.

Depth, and why 2 inches matters#

Keep the water about 2 inches (5 cm) deep at the deepest point, sloping shallower at the edges. In freezing conditions this is a welfare question, not a preference.

A bird that wades into deep water and soaks its breast feathers at 20°F (-7°C) has a genuine problem. Shallow water lets birds drink and dip without full immersion. Add a few flat stones or a half brick so there are dry footholds and a clear standing depth, which also gives smaller birds somewhere to perch and reduces the effective depth in one move.

Rough, textured basins beat slick glazed ones. Wet feet on smooth ceramic near ice is how birds end up in the water rather than beside it.

Siting a winter bath#

  • Put it in sun where you can, so daytime warmth helps the heater and a wet bird can dry.
  • Give it shelter from wind, ideally on the lee side of a hedge, shed or wall.
  • Keep it 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from cover, close enough for escape but not close enough to hide a cat; see cats and bird feeders.
  • Place it where you can reach it with a hose or a jug in January, because you will be topping it up often.
  • Keep it near the feeders but not under them, so hulls and droppings do not rain into it.

Raise the bath, or ground it deliberately

A pedestal bath at about 3 feet (0.9 m) is easier to keep clean and safer from cats. A ground-level basin attracts more species, including juncos and sparrows, but only site one at ground level if cats are not an issue in your yard.

Keeping it clean when it is frozen outside#

Winter baths get dirty faster than people expect: seed hulls blow in, droppings accumulate, and the water is not being flushed by rain.

Scrub and refill every few days, more often if traffic is heavy. In freezing weather a stiff brush and a dump-and-refill is usually enough; use a dilute bleach solution monthly, rinse thoroughly and refill. Never chip ice out of a concrete bath with a metal tool, since concrete cracks along the freeze line and a cracked basin is finished.

Concrete and terracotta baths generally should not be used with a de-icer through a hard winter at all. Water expands as it freezes at the edges and splits the material. Moving water, and the cheap alternatives#

Movement makes water easier for birds to find and slows freezing slightly, but a pump alone will not keep a bath open in a real freeze, and a pump left running in a bath that freezes will usually be destroyed. If you use a dripper or fountain, either pair it with a heater or shut it down for the winter. The options are in drippers, misters and moving water.

Without electricity, the workable approach is manual. Carry out warm water each morning, use a dark-colored plastic basin that absorbs sun, and float a ball or a stick to slow ice forming across the surface. A basin you can flex to pop the ice out beats one you have to chip. Rubber or heavy plastic feed pans work well for this and are effectively unbreakable.

A winter water setup that works#

  • A plastic or metal bath you can dump and flex, not glazed ceramic or concrete.
  • A thermostatic heater sized to your climate, 100 to 150 W for most of the middle states.
  • A GFCI outdoor outlet and an outdoor-rated cord with a drip loop.
  • Water 2 inches (5 cm) deep, with flat stones for footing.
  • Sited in sun, out of the wind, about 10 feet (3 m) from cover and within hose reach.
  • Scrubbed and refilled every few days, disinfected monthly.
