Moldy, Clumped or Wet Seed
Moldy seed is not merely stale. Aspergillus mold on damp seed produces aflatoxin, which is genuinely toxic to birds, and there is no way to salvage a contaminated batch.
The short answer
- Mold on damp seed can produce aflatoxin, a toxin from Aspergillus molds that harms and kills birds. Corn and peanuts carry the highest risk.
- Moldy seed goes in the trash. Not the compost pile, not the garden, and never scattered on the ground for something else to eat.
- Wear gloves when you clean out a moldy feeder, work outdoors and upwind, and do not breathe the dust.
- The two root causes are a feeder that lets water reach the seed and a feeder filled with more seed than the birds eat in three to five days.
- Clumping, a sour smell, black or gray fuzz, sprouting seed and dark caked patches around the ports all mean empty it and clean it, not top it up.
Moldy seed is not just unappetizing. Aspergillus molds growing on damp grain and nuts produce aflatoxin, which damages the liver and the immune system in birds and kills them at high exposure. The same spores cause aspergillosis, a respiratory infection that is often fatal in wild birds. Corn and peanuts carry the highest aflatoxin risk, sunflower and mixes carry a real one.
There is no salvage. Drying, rinsing, picking out the bad part and freezing all fail, because the toxin remains once the mold has produced it. Contaminated seed goes in the trash in a sealed bag, and the feeder gets stripped and disinfected before it is used again.

When you are unsure, throw it out. A few pounds of seed is not worth the risk to the birds you are trying to help, and the cost of guessing wrong is one-sided.
Aflatoxin does not wash out
Aflatoxin is a stable compound produced by Aspergillus mold before you ever see the problem. It is not removed by rinsing, drying, sunning or freezing the seed, and the mold that made it does not have to be visible for the toxin to be present. Once seed has been wet enough to clump or smell, it is finished.
Disposal: bag it and bin it#
The disposal rules are short and they matter.
- Trash, in a sealed bag. Household waste, tied off so it is not accessible to wildlife.
- Not the compost pile. A home pile rarely gets hot enough to destroy the mold, it holds the seed where birds, rodents and pets can reach it, and it spreads spores into beds where you work.
- Not scattered on the ground. Tipping bad seed under a hedge is the worst option, because that is exactly where ground-feeding birds, along with squirrels and rats, will find it.
- Not fed to chickens, livestock or pets. Aflatoxin is a livestock and companion animal problem too.
Clear the contaminated ground under the feeder as well. Wet seed and hulls sitting in the soil are their own reservoir, and the clean-up method is in seed mess, hulls and dead grass.
Cleaning out a moldy feeder safely#
Handle a caked, moldy feeder as a mild respiratory hazard rather than a chore.
- Work outdoors, upwind, on a still day. Never in a kitchen sink or a closed garage.
- Wear gloves, and a dust mask if the feeder is heavily caked. Aspergillus spores are a real inhalation risk for people as well as for birds, particularly for anyone with asthma or a suppressed immune system.
- Empty into a bag directly, without shaking or tipping from height, which aerosolizes the dust.
- Dismantle fully. Ports, tubes, bases, perches and seed trays all come apart on most feeders, and the residue hides in the joints.
- Scrape the caked material out dry with a stiff brush or a wooden stick before any water goes near it.
- Wash in hot soapy water, then disinfect with a weak bleach solution of roughly one part bleach to nine parts water, leaving it in contact for several minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry completely, ideally in sun and moving air. Refilling a damp feeder restarts the whole cycle.

Wooden feeders may not be recoverable
Bare wood absorbs moisture and mold gets into the grain, where scrubbing cannot reach it. If a wooden feeder or a wooden tray has repeatedly gone moldy and smells musty after cleaning and drying, replace it. Stop water reaching the seed#
Almost every moldy feeder has a water path you can find in two minutes.
- Roof overhang. The cap should extend beyond the ports so rain running off it clears the openings. Feeders with a flat cap flush to the tube let water straight in.
- Drainage at the base. Tubes need holes or a mesh base so any water that gets in leaves again. If yours has none, drill two or three small holes in the bottom cap.
- Ports above the seed line, not below the roof line. Water pooling in a port cup keeps the seed at that port permanently damp, which is why the ports cake first.
- Catch trays. A solid tray with no drainage is a bowl. Use mesh or drill it.
- Condensation. Clear plastic tubes in a sunny spot with cold nights sweat inside. Ventilated caps and a shaded position help.
- Snow. A drift on a platform feeder melts into the seed. Sweep platforms after any snowfall.
Find the water path with a hose
If you cannot see where the wet is coming from, hang the empty feeder and run a hose over it from above at an angle for thirty seconds, the way wind-driven rain arrives. Water finds the port cups, the seam under the cap and the missing drain hole faster than you will by eye.

Fill less: capacity is the other half#
The second cause is volume. A feeder holding three weeks of seed keeps the bottom layer sitting in the dark against damp plastic for three weeks.
Fill for three to five days of consumption, and less than that in hot, humid or wet conditions. A big feeder is fine, provided you only put a few inches of seed in it. Summer in the Southeast and along the Gulf is the hardest case: heat plus humidity spoils seed in days, and it is one reason summer bird feeding runs on small quantities and frequent cleaning.
Higher-risk and lower-risk foods#
Cracked corn and peanuts deserve the most caution, since corn and peanuts are the two commodities most associated with aflatoxin contamination. Buy them fresh, in small quantities, from a supplier with fast turnover, and never feed corn or peanuts that are discolored, dusty, shriveled or musty. Avoid bargain corn sold for wildlife where the storage history is unknown.
Whole sunflower in the shell is the most forgiving seed, safflower and nyjer sit in the middle, and hulled products are the least forgiving. Suet is a different failure mode: it goes rancid rather than moldy, faster above about 80°F (27°C), and no-melt cakes are the answer as described in the suet guide.
Storage before it gets to the feeder#
Seed often arrives at the feeder already compromised, because a paper bag on a garage floor absorbs humidity and ground moisture.
- Decant into a sealed metal or hard plastic container with a tight lid, which also keeps rodents out.
- Keep it cool, dark and off the concrete, on a shelf or a pallet.
- Buy quantities you will use within about a month in summer, two to three months in winter.
- Inspect each new bag. Dust, webbing, a musty smell, moth larvae or clumping at the bottom all mean returning it rather than feeding it.

A wet-weather routine#
- Check feeders the morning after any heavy rain, and empty any port that has caked.
- Fill for three days, not three weeks.
- Keep two feeders and rotate them, so one is always fully dry after cleaning while the other is in use.
- Clean on a schedule rather than on discovery, which for most feeders means every two weeks and weekly in summer, as set out in how often to clean bird feeders.
- Sweep the ground under the station weekly.
- Bag and bin anything you are unsure about.
Mold at a feeder is worth treating seriously for the same reason a dirty feeder is: it concentrates many birds in one place, so anything harmful you leave there reaches all of them.
Frequently asked questions#
Is moldy bird seed dangerous to birds?
Yes. Damp seed grows Aspergillus molds, which can produce aflatoxin, a toxin that damages the liver and immune system and can kill birds outright at high doses. Aspergillus spores can also cause aspergillosis, a serious respiratory infection in birds. Corn and peanuts are the highest-risk foods. There is no safe amount to feed and no way to wash or dry the toxin out.
Can I compost moldy bird seed?
No. Composting keeps the material available to wildlife, encourages rodents, and spreads mold spores through your garden. A home pile rarely runs hot enough or long enough to be relied on. Bag moldy seed and put it in the household trash.
How do I clean a feeder that had moldy seed in it?

Why does my seed clump in the feeder?
Water is getting in, or humidity is high enough that the seed absorbs moisture from the air. Check for rain entering the ports, a roof that does not overhang, blocked drainage holes at the base, condensation inside a plastic tube, and a catch tray with no drainage. Hulled seed such as sunflower hearts clumps faster than seed in the shell because there is no protective shell.
How much seed should I put in a feeder?
Only what the birds will finish in about three to five days, and less in hot humid weather or a wet spell. Overfilling is the most common cause of moldy seed, since the bottom layer sits for weeks. A large feeder filled a quarter full is safer than a small one packed to the top.
Can I dry out damp seed and still use it?
Only if it is simply damp, caught the same day, has no smell and no visible growth. Spread it on a tray in a dry airy place and use it within a day or two. Once seed has clumped, smells sour or musty, or shows any fuzz or discoloration, throw it out. Aflatoxin is not removed by drying.
