Feeder Materials Compared
A bird feeder lives outdoors in ultraviolet light, freeze and thaw, driving rain and the teeth of a squirrel. Only a few materials handle all four, and the price tag is a poor guide to which.
The short answer
- Recycled plastic (HDPE poly lumber) plus stainless hardware is the longest-lived combination in general use. It does not rot, fade badly, or absorb water.
- Polycarbonate is the clear plastic worth having. Acrylic and styrene both go brittle and cloudy in a few seasons of ultraviolet light.
- Powder-coated steel is excellent until the coating chips; after that it rusts from the chip outward, so touch up scratches the season you notice them.
- Cedar looks best and cleans worst. Porous wood absorbs oils and moisture, which makes proper disinfection difficult and shortens the useful life to a handful of seasons.
- Feeders almost never fail as a slab of material. They fail at the ports, perches, hinges and hanger, so judge those parts first.
Feeders fail in four ways: ultraviolet light makes plastic brittle, water gets into places that never dry, metal coatings chip and rust, and squirrels chew. Any material that handles all four survives a decade. Most handle two.
That is the whole comparison, and it explains why the ranking is not the one you would guess. Recycled plastic lumber, a material that looks cheap and feels heavy, generally outlasts handsome cedar by years. Clear polycarbonate outlasts the visually identical acrylic tube next to it on the shelf.

Materials at a glance#
Service life below assumes a feeder that is cleaned regularly and gets ordinary sun and weather. Treat these as rough bands, not guarantees. A shaded feeder in a mild climate can double them and a south-facing one in the Southwest can halve them.

Glass sits oddly in that table because it never degrades and never survives being dropped on a patio. It is a hummingbird and nectar material, discussed below.
Clear plastics: not all the same#
Manufacturers rarely label the polymer, so learn the symptoms.
Polycarbonate stays clear, takes an impact without shattering, and tolerates years of sun. It is the material used in the better tube feeders and in most quality nectar reservoirs. It will eventually haze, and it does not love strong solvents, but it is the clear plastic to look for.
Acrylic is stiffer and cheaper. Outdoors it yellows, develops fine surface crazing, and then cracks in cold weather, often along a stress line at a screw hole.
Polystyrene is the thin, slightly glassy plastic on very cheap feeders. It goes brittle fastest of all and a squirrel can open it in an afternoon.
A quick shelf test
Flex a corner of the clear body gently. Polycarbonate bends slightly and springs back. Acrylic and styrene feel rigid and make a faint clicking or creaking sound at the limit, which is the noise of a material that will crack next February.

Recycled plastic lumber#
Poly lumber made from recycled high-density polyethylene, usually milk jugs, is the quiet best buy for seed feeders. It is dimensionally stable, does not absorb water, cannot rot or split, holds screws well, and washes clean because there is nothing for oils to soak into.
The disadvantages are honest ones. It is heavy, which means a sturdier pole or hook. It is not clear, so you cannot see the seed level. And the color, though stable, is a solid flat tone that some people simply dislike.
For a platform or hopper feeder, where you do not need transparency, it is difficult to beat. It is also the material most platform feeder plans can be adapted to if you would rather build than buy.
Powder-coated steel and aluminum#
Powder coating is a baked-on polymer layer, tougher than paint and genuinely durable. A powder-coated steel feeder body or cage handles sun, rain and squirrels without complaint.
Its weakness is mechanical damage. Once a chip exposes bare steel, rust starts at that point and creeps under the surrounding coating. Chips come from gravel thrown by a mower, from the feeder being dropped on a refill, and from squirrel teeth.
Check three things annually: the underside of the roof where condensation collects, the seams around welds, and the hanging loop. Touch up any bare metal with exterior enamel before winter. Aluminum sidesteps the problem entirely by not rusting, but it is softer and dents rather than resists.
Hardware is where feeders actually die
Screws, hinges, springs, clips and hanging loops are the parts that seize, snap or rust through. Stainless or coated hardware costs the manufacturer very little and adds years. If a listing does not say, assume plain steel and expect to be replacing a hinge pin in year three. Routine checks and fixes are in feeder repair and maintenance.
Cedar, pine and other woods#
Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and looks right in a garden, which is why so many hopper feeders are made of it. As a material for something that holds food, though, wood has a structural problem: it is porous.
Seed oils soak in. Water soaks in. Neither comes out with a scrub, so a wooden feeder cannot be disinfected to the same standard as plastic or metal, and the recommended bleach soak in safe disinfectants for feeders is harder on wood than on any other material. Wood is also the material squirrels enlarge fastest, chewing feeding slots into open holes.
If you want a wooden feeder, treat it as a five-season item rather than a lifetime one, keep it dry seed only, and site it under an overhang. Never use pressure-treated lumber or apply an interior finish where seed contacts it. Untreated cedar, left to weather gray, is the safe option.
Wood plus damp seed
A wooden hopper that stays damp is the fastest route to spoiled seed, because the walls themselves hold moisture against the seed column. If you see a dark stain spreading on the inside of a wooden feeder, the seed inside it is at risk, and the symptoms and consequences are in moldy, clumped or wet seed.
Glass#
Glass is for nectar. It does not stain, does not scratch under a bottle brush, does not hold sugar residue in surface pores, and does not degrade in sun. For hummingbird feeders, where every trace of old nectar matters, that is worth the fragility.
The parts to scrutinize on a glass feeder are the base and the ports, which are plastic on nearly every design, and the seal between them. A cracked or hardened gasket is the usual cause of a nectar feeder that drips and attracts ants.
Glass has almost no place in a seed feeder. It is heavy, it breaks, and polycarbonate gives you the same transparency without the risk.
Matching material to climate#
- Hot, high-ultraviolet regions. Polycarbonate or metal. Acrylic will not last two summers, and dark powder-coated metal in full sun can warm the seed enough to speed spoilage, so favor light colors and shade.
- Wet, mild regions. Non-porous everything. Recycled plastic and stainless hardware. Wood stays damp for weeks at a time.
- Hard-freeze regions. Avoid brittle plastics, which crack at low temperature, and check that any moving part such as a weight-activated shroud is metal on metal rather than plastic on plastic.
- Coastal and salt air. Stainless or aluminum hardware, and expect powder-coated steel to need annual touch-up.
What to buy, in one paragraph#

What is the most durable bird feeder material?
