Safe Disinfectants for Feeders
Most feeder cleaning advice online recommends vinegar because it sounds gentle. It is a decent cleaner and a poor disinfectant, and the difference matters when a salmonella outbreak reaches your yard.
The short answer
- The standard disinfectant is 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water, about a 10 percent bleach solution: soak roughly 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly, dry completely.
- Vinegar is a cleaner, not a reliable disinfectant against the organisms that matter at a feeder. Use it for mineral deposits, not for disease control.
- Dish soap is not a disinfectant either, but it is required first, because bleach cannot penetrate a film of seed oil and droppings.

The standard disinfectant for bird feeders is 1 part regular unscented household bleach to 9 parts water, roughly a 10 percent bleach solution. Soak the dismantled feeder for about 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly with clean water, then dry completely before refilling. That is the recommendation you will find from wildlife agencies and avian veterinarians, and it has not changed in decades.
Almost everything else offered as an alternative is a cleaner rather than a disinfectant. The distinction sounds pedantic until you consider what you are trying to achieve. Cleaning removes visible dirt. Disinfecting kills the organisms that survive after the dirt is gone, and those are the ones that transmit disease between birds.

Notice how much of the list is "no". That is the point. There is one workhorse disinfectant here and a set of cleaners that support it.
Bleach: the ratio, the timing and the limits#
Use regular unscented household bleach, the plain sodium hypochlorite kind. Avoid scented, splashless and "gel" formulations, which contain thickeners and fragrances that complicate rinsing.
The ratio. One part bleach to nine parts water. In a 10 quart bucket that is about 1 quart of bleach to 9 quarts of water (1 liter to 9 liters). For a small nectar feeder, a half cup of bleach in about 4.5 cups of water is plenty.
The contact time. Roughly 10 minutes of full submersion. Shorter soaks are less certain; much longer soaks start to corrode metal and dull painted finishes without adding much.
The freshness. Diluted bleach loses potency within about a day, faster in sunlight and heat. Mix it for the job and pour it out afterward. A jug of last month's dilution is close to plain water.
The rinse. Rinse until you cannot smell chlorine, then rinse again, paying attention to ports, threads and hollow perches that trap liquid. Then dry completely, as set out in how to clean a bird feeder.
Never mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia
Combining bleach with vinegar, or any acidic cleaner, releases chlorine gas. Combining bleach with ammonia or an ammonia-based glass cleaner releases chloramine vapors. Both cause serious respiratory injury and both have killed people cleaning in enclosed spaces. Use one product at a time, rinse thoroughly between products, and work outdoors or in a well ventilated area with gloves on.
Why vinegar is not enough#
Vinegar keeps appearing in feeder cleaning advice because it is cheap, familiar and feels safe around wildlife. Two of those three are true.
Household vinegar is around 5 percent acetic acid. It dissolves mineral deposits, cuts light grime and helps with hard water film. There is laboratory work showing acetic acid has some antimicrobial activity at higher concentrations and long contact times, and none of it supports treating a 5 percent solution as equivalent to a bleach soak on a scratched plastic feeder in a backyard.
The organisms that matter here are the ones behind salmonella outbreaks at feeders and house finch eye disease. Neither is something to gamble on with a product that has not been validated for the job.
So: use vinegar to descale a bird bath or lift white mineral crust from a hummingbird feeder if you prefer it to scrubbing. Do not use it as your disease control step, and never in the same session as bleach without a full rinse in between.
Why dish soap comes first#
Dish soap does not disinfect. It does something a disinfectant cannot do for itself, which is remove the organic film that shields organisms from contact.
Seed oils, saliva, droppings and rendered suet form a layer on feeder surfaces. Bleach reacts with organic material and is consumed by it, so a bleach soak on a dirty feeder is partly spent before it reaches anything living. This is why the order is always scrub first, disinfect second, and why a five second rinse followed by a bleach dip is largely theater.
Rinse the soap out before the bleach soak. Detergent and bleach together are not dangerous the way bleach and ammonia are, but surfactants can reduce the effective concentration of hypochlorite, and there is no reason to hobble the step you are relying on.
Matching the disinfectant to the material#
What a feeder is made of decides what you can safely do to it.
- Polycarbonate and hard plastic: tolerate bleach at 1 to 9 well. Avoid abrasive pads, which scratch the surface and give mold something to root into.
- Acrylic: bleach is fine; alcohol and some solvents cause crazing, the fine cracking that makes a feeder impossible to clean afterward.
- Glass: the most forgiving material there is. Bleach, boiling water and dishwashers are all fine.
- Powder coated steel: bleach is acceptable for a 10 minute soak, but rinse thoroughly and dry fast. Any chip in the coating is a rust start, a topic covered in feeder repair and maintenance.
- Untreated or painted wood: porous, so it cannot be truly disinfected, and bleach will lighten it. Scrub hard, use a brief wipe rather than a soak, and accept a shorter service life. The full comparison is in feeder materials compared.
- Copper and brass trim: bleach corrodes both. Keep soaks short and rinse immediately.
- Nylon and mesh socks: not disinfectable. Replace them rather than trying, especially on nyjer feeders.
Heat is a disinfectant too
If your feeder is genuinely dishwasher safe, a hot cycle disinfects by temperature alone and saves you the chemistry. Check the manufacturer's guidance first, because heat warps thin plastic, clouds acrylic and ruins wood. A dishwasher still will not reach into a narrow tube or a feeding port, so brush those by hand either way.
What never to use#
- Ammonia or ammonia-based glass cleaner. Not on a feeder, and never anywhere near bleach.
- Pine oil, phenol and other "disinfectant" cleaners. Phenolic compounds are toxic to birds and are not worth the risk of incomplete rinsing.
- Quaternary ammonium wipes and sprays intended for kitchen counters. They leave a deliberate residue by design.
- Bleach with added detergent or fragrance. Harder to rinse, no more effective.
- Insecticides or pesticide sprays on or around a feeder for any reason, including ants. Use a water moat instead, and see pesticides, lawns and birds.
- Petroleum jelly, cooking oil or grease on poles and hangers as a squirrel deterrent. It fouls feathers, destroys their insulating and waterproofing structure, and can be fatal. Use a proper baffle instead.
- Abrasive scouring pads on plastic. The scratches you leave are permanent mold habitat.
Keep a dedicated kit
A bucket, gloves, a bottle brush, a port brush, an old toothbrush, dish soap and a jug of plain bleach, stored together in the garage. Total cost is small and the point is that the equipment is never in use elsewhere when you need it. Kits that live under the kitchen sink get raided.
A safe routine, start to finish#
- Gloves on, work outdoors or at a utility sink, never in a food preparation sink.
- Empty the feeder and bin the old seed. Rake up the debris underneath.
- Dismantle fully.
- Scrub with hot water and plain dish soap until surfaces are visibly clean.
- Rinse the soap off.
- Soak about 10 minutes in fresh 1 part bleach to 9 parts water.
- Rinse thoroughly until no chlorine smell remains.
- Dry completely, then reassemble and refill.
- Wash your hands with soap and water, and pour the used solution down a drain rather than onto plants.
