A hopper is the feeder most people picture when they picture a bird feeder. It is also the one most likely to be bought three times too big and to hide a layer of wet seed for a month.

The short answer

  • A hopper feeder is a covered reservoir that releases seed by gravity onto a narrow tray at its base. It suits medium and large perching birds: cardinals, jays, grosbeaks, finches and woodpeckers that will use a ledge.
  • Buy for one week of seed, not for the biggest number on the box. A 10-pound hopper in a quiet yard is a seed spoilage machine.

A hopper feeder is a roofed reservoir that meters seed by gravity onto a narrow tray at its base. It is also the feeder people most often get wrong, in two specific ways. They buy one sized for a bird sanctuary and hang it in a yard that gets nine birds a day, and they never look inside the reservoir until the seed has gone gray.

How the gravity mechanism actually works#

The whole design rests on a gap, usually 3/8 to 3/4 inch (10 to 19 mm), between the bottom edge of the reservoir wall and the floor of the tray. Seed flows out until the pile on the tray reaches the bottom of the gap and blocks further flow. Birds eat, the pile drops, more seed slides down. That is the entire mechanism, and it has no moving parts to fail.

What it does have is one failure mode: bridging. Seed that is damp, oily or irregularly shaped forms a self-supporting arch over the gap. The tray empties, the reservoir stays full, and the feeder looks fine from the kitchen window while the birds go elsewhere.

Bridging is nearly always a moisture problem rather than a seed problem. Sunflower flows freely when dry and cakes when it is not, which is why the sealing sections below matter more than the marketing on the box.

The test that tells you everything

Look at the tray, not the reservoir. A hopper with a visibly full reservoir and a bare tray is not a well-stocked feeder, it is a jammed one. Two seconds of looking at the right thing saves a fortnight of wondering where the birds went.

Capacity: buy for a week, not for a season#

Manufacturers advertise capacity because it is the easiest number to print. It is close to the least useful one.

Seed spoils. Sunflower is high in oil, and oil goes rancid, faster in heat and faster still in humidity. Birds detect rancidity long before you can, so an oversized hopper that takes six weeks to empty will sit ignored while you conclude that hoppers do not work.

If you want less refilling, the honest answer is two smaller feeders in different spots rather than one enormous one. Two feeders also cut aggression, since a dominant grackle cannot guard both. Weather sealing: the three places rain gets in#

A hopper is sold as weatherproof. Most are weather-resistant at best, and they leak in predictable places.

The roof-to-side seam. On wooden hoppers this is a butt joint that opens as the wood cycles through wet and dry. On plastic and metal models it is usually a slot the glass or polycarbonate side panel slides into. Water wicks along that slot and runs down the inside face of the panel, straight into the seed column. Run a hose over the closed feeder and look for a wet stripe inside.

The lift-off lid. A lid that simply rests on the roof will let wind-driven rain under it every time. A lid with a lip that overhangs the opening by at least half an inch (13 mm), or one that is hinged with a rubber gasket, is worth a lot more than an extra pound of capacity.

The tray floor. Trays need drilled holes, not molded channels, and the holes need to be big enough that a wet hull cannot plug them. Screened trays drain best. A tray that holds a quarter inch (6 mm) of standing water after a storm will spoil seed from below no matter how good the roof is.

Wet seed is not just wasted seed

Damp seed in an enclosed reservoir grows mold, and some molds produce toxins that sicken birds. Salmonella spreads at feeders too, particularly where many birds crowd a shared surface. Tray geometry decides who dominates#

A hopper is only as selective as its landing surface. Three dimensions do the work.

Ledge depth. A ledge of about 1 inch (2.5 cm) is enough for a finch or chickadee and awkward for anything bigger. At 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) you get cardinals and grosbeaks, which is usually the point. Past that, you have effectively bolted a platform feeder to the bottom of the hopper, and European starlings, common grackles and mourning doves will settle in and stay.

Ledge run. A tray that wraps all four sides holds more birds at once but also lets a flock of blackbirds surround the feeder. Two-sided trays halve the standing room.

Headroom. The vertical distance between tray and roof overhang. Under about 5 inches (13 cm), a grackle has to crouch and a starling gives up quickly, while a downy woodpecker or chickadee is unbothered. This is the least discussed and most effective selectivity feature on a hopper.

What to put in a hopper#

Hoppers tolerate a wider range of seed than tubes, because the gap is bigger and the tray catches what does not flow.

  • Black oil sunflower is the default. It suits almost every hopper visitor and flows well.
  • Safflower is the strategic choice. Cardinals, chickadees, titmice and finches eat it; most grackles, starlings and squirrels reject it. It flows slightly slower than sunflower but rarely bridges.
  • Striped sunflower works better in a hopper than in a tube, since the wider gap handles the larger seed. It filters for stronger bills.
  • Safflower and sunflower mixed is a reasonable transition if you are weaning a yard off a cheap blend.
  • Millet and cracked corn are best kept out. They belong at ground level, where the juncos and sparrows that eat them actually feed. Put them in a ground feeder instead.

Mounting: pole, post or hanging#

Hoppers are heavy when full, which changes the calculation.

A pole mount is the best option in almost every case, because a hopper is the feeder a squirrel most wants to reach and a smooth pole with a correctly sized baffle is the only thing that reliably stops one. Most hoppers accept either a hanging bail or a threaded socket underneath.

Post or deck mounting is stable and easy to service, but a deck rail gives squirrels and raccoons a running start. If you mount on a rail, expect to add a baffle anyway.

Hanging works, but a full 4-pound (1.8 kg) hopper swinging in wind will spill seed off the tray, and any branch above it is a squirrel launch pad. Give it a roof you can open one-handed

You will refill a hopper in the cold, in gloves, holding a scoop. A lid that needs two hands and a lifted-off roof panel gets refilled less often than a hinged one. This is a small detail that quietly decides whether your feeder is full in January.

Cleaning a hopper without making a mess#

The reservoir is the part people skip, because emptying it means dealing with the seed.

  1. Take the feeder down and pour the reservoir into a bucket, not onto the ground. Fresh seed goes back in later; anything clumped or discolored is thrown out.
  2. Brush the tray and the seed gap. A stiff bottle brush or an old toothbrush reaches the corners where the gap meets the tray floor, which is where the paste of hull dust and moisture forms.

  4. Dry completely. A hopper reassembled damp will bridge within days.

A hopper setup that works#

  • A 2 to 4 pound (1 to 2 kg) hopper with a hinged, overhanging lid and a screened or drilled tray floor.
  • A tray ledge of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) if you want cardinals, narrower if blackbirds are already a problem.
  • Black oil sunflower as standard, safflower as the switch when the bullies arrive.
  • On a smooth steel pole with a baffle, 5 feet (1.5 m) up and 10 feet (3 m) clear of any fence, branch or roof edge.
  • Sited 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.5 m) from cover, following where to hang a bird feeder.
  • Emptied and washed every two weeks, reservoir included.
