How to Choose a Bird Feeder
Almost every bad feeder purchase comes from starting with the product instead of the job. Decide what you want the feeder to do, then judge the build against four criteria you can check with your hands.
The short answer
- Choose by job first: which birds, which food, how much squirrel and blackbird pressure, and how wet your winters are. The feeder type follows from those four answers.

The right feeder is decided by four answers, not by a product page: which birds you want, what you intend to put in it, how much pressure you get from squirrels and blackbirds, and how wet and cold your winters are. Answer those four and the feeder type is nearly chosen for you.
This page does not name products or rank them. That is deliberate. A model number is good for about two seasons before the tooling changes, the supplier changes, or the line gets discontinued, while the physical criteria that make a feeder work last for decades. Being able to look at an unfamiliar feeder and see in ten seconds that the ports are plastic and the base is riveted shut is worth more than any list of recommendations.
What follows is the decision framework in order: the job, the four criteria that genuinely decide quality, the numbers to look up, the honest tradeoffs, and a checklist you can carry into a store.
Start with the job, not the feeder#
A feeder is a delivery system for one kind of food to one group of birds. Get the job wrong and no amount of build quality helps.
- Small perching songbirds and finches. A tube feeder with short perches. Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, goldfinches and house finches all work a vertical port comfortably.
- Cardinals, jays, grosbeaks and doves. These are heavy-bodied birds that want a surface to stand on. A platform or tray feeder or a large hopper.
- Woodpeckers. A suet feeder, plus a peanut feeder if you want the smaller species to linger.
- Goldfinches and siskins specifically. A dedicated nyjer feeder with ports around 1/8 inch (3 mm). Nyjer pours straight out of a sunflower-sized port.

If you do not know which birds are realistic for your area, work backwards from the bird food chart and your regional guide. It is cheaper than buying a feeder for a species that does not live near you.
The one-sentence version
Buy the feeder that matches the food you plan to use most, in the smallest size that lasts a week, with metal around the ports and a base that twists off in your hands.
The four criteria that decide quality#
Nearly every feeder failure traces back to one of these four. They are all checkable in a store, with no tools and no research.
1. Metal port collars, not plastic. A squirrel gnaws a plastic port into a wide-open hole in a single season, and the entire seed column runs out onto the ground. Stamped steel or die-cast metal around each opening is the single upgrade most worth paying for. Chewed collars are also the quiet answer to a feeder that empties overnight with no bird in sight.
2. A base that comes apart without tools. If the bottom plate is glued, riveted, or held by a screw that needs a driver, the feeder will not get cleaned on schedule. It just will not. Look for a twist-lock or clip-off base. This matters more for bird health than anything else on the list, because damp seed in a sealed base is where mold and salmonella begin.
3. Real drainage. The base needs drilled or molded holes you can see light through, not "drainage channels" in the marketing copy. Wind-driven rain gets in through the ports on every feeder ever made. The question is only whether it can get out again.
4. Capacity matched to about one week of consumption. A large reservoir feels like less work. In a quiet yard it means seed sitting for a month and a half, going rancid, and a feeder that birds stop visiting for reasons you cannot see. Sizing is worked through in feeder size and capacity.
The specs worth looking up before you buy#
Manufacturers rarely list these, which is precisely why they are useful. Measure them yourself in the store or ask.

Wildlife pressure changes the answer#
Squirrel and blackbird pressure is a design constraint, not an afterthought. Decide how bad yours is before you shop, because the fix is usually structural.
If squirrels reach your feeders, the honest answer is that no feeder alone solves it. A smooth pole with a correctly sized baffle solves it, and the feeder on top becomes almost irrelevant. For blackbirds, perch length does most of the work. For starlings specifically, an upside-down suet design does nearly all of it.
Test the perch with your little finger
Hook a finger over the perch as if you were a bird. If it feels like a comfortable place for something starling-sized to stand, it is one. You want short, thin, and angled slightly down.
Climate changes it too#
Wet climates punish open trays and reward capped tubes with real drainage. If you feed in the Pacific Northwest, the Southeast, or anywhere with a long wet season, prioritize drainage and a weather dome over capacity every time, and expect to clean on the short end of the cleaning schedule.
Cold and dry is easier on seed but harder on materials. Plastic gets brittle below about 10°F (-12°C), and a cheap hinge or clip that works fine in July snaps in January. Metal and poly lumber handle freeze and thaw cycles better.
Hot climates argue for smaller capacity across the board. Sunflower oil goes rancid faster in heat, suet needs a no-melt formulation above about 90°F (32°C), and nectar has to be changed every two days, which is the whole argument for small hummingbird feeders.
Tradeoffs where reasonable people differ#
Not every choice has a right answer. These are the three that come up most.
Big feeder or two small ones. Two small feeders spread the flock, cut disease transmission, and keep seed fresher. They also double the refilling and the cleaning. If you travel often, one larger feeder that you empty and dry properly between refills is a defensible choice. How many feeders and how far apart works through the spacing.
Selective or generous. A caged feeder with 1.5 inch (4 cm) grid gives you chickadees and finches in peace and shuts out jays, doves and squirrels. Some people want the jays. A caged feeder is a decision about who you are willing to exclude, not simply a better feeder.
Clear or opaque. A clear tube shows you when seed stops moving, which is diagnostic information you genuinely want. An opaque hopper hides the same problem for months. The tradeoff is UV degradation: clear plastics cloud sooner.
Capacity is a welfare issue, not just an economy one
Seed in the bottom inch of a tube sits below the lowest port where no bird can reach it. It absorbs moisture, molds, and contaminates every refill poured on top. Empty and dry a feeder completely rather than topping it up, and read moldy, clumped or wet seed if you have seen a dark ring in the base.
The ways people buy the wrong feeder#
Six failure patterns account for most regretted purchases.
- Buying for the bird you saw once. Build for the species that live in your yard all year, and treat the rare visitor as a bonus.
- Buying capacity instead of quality. A 5 pound reservoir with plastic ports is a worse purchase than a 1 pound tube with metal ones.
- Ignoring the cleaning path. Ask how you would scrub the inside of the base. If the answer involves a long brush and hope, keep looking.
- Buying the feeder before the pole. The mounting decides squirrel outcomes. Read poles, hooks, trees or deck mounts first.
- Adding a wide seed tray by default. Trays cut waste and also convert a selective feeder into a grackle platform. Buy one that is removable, and take it off in blackbird season.
- Skipping the warranty question. Ask specifically whether the warranty covers squirrel damage. Many exclude it, and that exclusion tells you what the manufacturer expects to happen to the ports.
