Bees and Wasps at Hummingbird Feeders

Every effective fix for bees and wasps at a nectar feeder is about denying access, not killing insects. Kill them and you have a poisoned feeder and the same problem next week.

The short answer

  • Switch to a saucer feeder. The nectar sits below the port where a hummingbird tongue reaches it and a bee's tongue does not, and this single change solves most cases.
  • Never dilute the nectar to make it less attractive. Four parts water to one part white sugar is what hummingbirds need, and a weaker mix costs them energy without deterring insects.

Bees and wasps at a nectar feeder are an access problem. Fix the geometry so the insects cannot reach the sugar and the hummingbirds still can, and the situation resolves without anything being killed.

The single most effective change is switching from an inverted bottle to a saucer feeder, where the nectar sits in a shallow basin below the feeding port. Why they show up#

Nectar feeders offer a concentrated sugar source that never runs dry, which is more reliable than any flower. Honey bees recruit nestmates to a good find through the waggle dance, so one scout can turn into a working crowd within a day. Yellowjackets simply patrol and remember.

Two things make a feeder easy to find: leaks and drips. Sticky residue on the outside of a bottle or on the pole is a scent beacon at close range, and it is why one feeder gets swarmed while an identical one 20 feet (6 m) away is ignored. Color plays a smaller part than people assume, though yellow feeder parts and yellow bee guards do attract more attention from wasps than red ones. If your feeder has yellow plastic flowers at the ports, swapping in red replacements is a cheap thing to try.

The one-sentence fix

Keep the nectar ratio where it belongs#

Four parts water to one part plain white sugar. Do not weaken it.

The 4:1 ratio approximates the sugar concentration of the flowers hummingbirds feed on, and a hummingbird's daily energy budget is tight enough that a diluted mix means more trips for less return, which matters most for a female feeding chicks. Bees will work a weak solution regardless, so the change costs the birds something and gains you nothing.

What not to put near a nectar feeder

No insecticide or wasp spray on the feeder, the pole, the hook, the ground or nearby plants. No petroleum jelly, cooking oil or sticky barrier products, which mat feathers so a bird cannot waterproof or insulate itself. Bee guards and port hardware#

A bee guard is a small plastic or mesh cage that sits over the feeding port. It puts a gap between the insect and the nectar that a hummingbird's tongue crosses easily.

They work best on bottle feeders, which need the help. Two practical points: guards clog with dried sugar and wick nectar onto their outer surface, at which point they become a feeding platform, so wipe them at every refill. And guards must be the type made for your feeder, since a loose fit lets wasps in around the edge.

Some feeders come with removable perches and port inserts. If your model allows it, red inserts and clean guards together outperform either one alone.

Move it, do not fight it#

Relocating a feeder 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 m) breaks an established insect pattern more often than you would expect. Foraging bees return to a memorized location and take time to re-scout, while hummingbirds are wide-ranging and generally re-find a feeder within a day, especially if you leave the old hook empty and the new one visible.

Give them somewhere else to be

The late-summer wasp surge#

Yellowjacket colonies reach peak size in late summer, right as their insect prey and their own larval sugar supply decline. The workers switch to hunting sugar, which is why a feeder that was quiet in June is covered in wasps in August and September.

It is seasonal and it ends with the first hard cold. Through that window, keep the exterior spotless, run saucer feeders only, cut the fill volume so nectar is consumed in a day or two, and be willing to shift the feeder around the yard. Cleaning is part of the answer#

Sugar residue on any exterior surface is what turns a feeder into a wasp destination. Wash the whole feeder, including the base groove, the port collars and the guards, in hot water with a brush at every refill. In weather above about 85°F (29°C), that means every day or two.

A setup that keeps the peace#
