Seed Cylinders and Spreadable Bird Foods
You are paying four to eight times the price of loose seed for a binder that keeps it in one place. Sometimes that is a bad deal and sometimes it is exactly the right one.
The short answer

A large share of the shelf space in any wild bird store is seed that has been glued into a shape: cylinders that slide onto a spike, rings, bells on a string, stackable discs, and tubs of soft food that looks like coarse peanut butter. All of it costs more per pound than the same seed loose, and all of it solves the same problem.
That problem is not nutrition. Birds do not care whether their sunflower arrives loose or pressed. The problem is mess, sorting and spill: seed swept out of a feeder onto the ground, hulls building up on a patio, and a bag of mix in which a third of the contents get discarded. Bound seed fixes all of that, and you pay for the fix.

What these products actually are#
Under the packaging, there are only four formats and they behave differently.

The cylinder is the format that has taken over, because it is easy to serve. It sits on a metal spike or hangs inside a simple cage, birds cling to it directly, and there is nothing to fill, unclog or unscrew. That is a genuine advantage over a tube feeder, which needs the full routine in how to clean a feeder every few weeks.
How they are bound#
Three binders account for nearly everything on the shelf, and knowing which one you have tells you how the product will behave in weather.
- Gelatin. An animal protein that sets to a firm, slightly rubbery matrix. It holds seed hard, birds break pieces off cleanly, and it is what most homemade cylinder and wreath recipes use, including the method in seed wreaths. Its weakness is water: gelatin softens and eventually dissolves in prolonged rain and humidity.
- Starch or flour. Cheaper, baked or set into a firm block. It gives a slightly crumbly cylinder that sheds more than a gelatin one and absorbs moisture readily, which is where mold starts.
- Sugar syrup or molasses. Cheap, glossy and common in inexpensive seed bells. It is hygroscopic, so in humid weather the bell goes sticky rather than firm, and it attracts ants and wasps. Nutritionally it contributes nothing a bird needs.
- Rendered fat. Used in stackable cakes and seed-and-suet blends, so they behave like suet: excellent in cold weather, soft and problematic above about 90F (32C). The temperature rules in the suet guide apply directly.
None of these binders is a health concern in the quantities involved. They are inert or, in the case of fat, useful. The one to be slightly wary of is heavy sugar, not because it is toxic but because you are buying syrup by the pound at seed prices.
You are buying convenience, not better food
The seed inside a cylinder is ordinary sunflower, peanuts, millet and fruit. What you are paying for is that it stays put. Judge these products on how much mess and waste they remove from your particular situation, not on any nutritional claim.
The price problem#
The arithmetic is stark. Loose black oil sunflower runs roughly $1.00 to $1.60 per lb in a 40 lb (18 kg) bag. A 2 lb (0.9 kg) pressed cylinder commonly sells for $12 to $20, which is $6 to $10 per lb. Spreadable tubs often work out to $9 to $16 per lb. A small seed bell is cheaper in absolute terms and rarely better per pound. All of these are approximate 2026 United States retail figures and they move.
That is four to eight times the price of the same seed loose, which puts a full season on cylinders well beyond most budgets. The honest counter-argument is waste. If a third of your cheap mix ends up on the ground, your effective cost per pound eaten is far higher than the sticker price, and a cylinder that is eaten entirely narrows the gap. It narrows it. It does not close it.
Where they genuinely win#
There are situations where a cylinder is the right answer at any price, and they are more common than the price tag suggests.
- Balconies, decks and patios. Nothing falls, so nothing has to be swept. This is the strongest case of all, and it fits neatly with the constraints in balcony feeding.
- Anywhere spilled seed causes trouble. A hull layer draws rodents and kills grass, and a bound product removes the cause rather than managing it. See seed mess.
- Travel and irregular filling. A 4 lb (1.8 kg) cylinder can run for a week or more in a modest yard, so a weekend away does not mean an empty feeder.
- Rental properties and shared spaces where a mess under the feeder becomes someone else's problem.
- People who dislike or cannot manage feeder cleaning. A spike holder has almost nothing to clean.
- Mixed-species interest. A cylinder with peanuts and fruit pressed in pulls woodpeckers, nuthatches and titmice that ignore a millet mix.
They lose the argument in a large yard with a lawn under the feeder, in a high-traffic station that would eat a cylinder in two days, and anywhere squirrels are unmanaged. A squirrel can carry an entire small cylinder away intact, which is an expensive lesson. Fit a baffle before you buy one, as in stopping squirrels.
Bells, rings and stackable cakes#
Seed bells are the entry product and the weakest of the group. Many are sugar-bound, they crack and drop chunks, and the wire or string hanger is often the first thing to fail. They work well as a short trial, as a gift, or as a way to test whether your yard will use bound seed at all before you commit to a cylinder.
Rings and wreaths behave like cylinders and hang from a branch without hardware, which suits people who do not want a pole. Homemade gelatin versions are straightforward and cost a fraction of the retail price, which is the argument in pine cone feeders.
Stackable cakes are a system rather than a food: square or round cakes threaded onto a central post so you can run suet, seed and nut cakes together on one feeder. They are genuinely useful for offering several foods in a small footprint, and the tradeoffs between cake formats are covered in suet cake versus suet plug.
Spreadable, peanut-butter-style foods#
Bark butter is a trade term for a category: soft, spreadable foods based on peanut butter, rendered fat, corn meal and sometimes mealworms or fruit. Several manufacturers sell versions under different names, and homemade versions using unsalted peanut butter, lard and cornmeal are close in composition. There is no single product being described when someone uses the phrase.
They are effective, and unusually so at pulling in species that are hard to draw to a seed feeder: bluebirds, wrens, warblers in migration, catbirds, brown creepers, kinglets and woodpeckers. Bark-foraging birds respond to food presented on a vertical rough surface in a way they do not respond to a tube.
Their weakness is temperature and mess. A spreadable food is soft by design, which means it is soft on a bird's face and feathers when it warms up. Treat them like suet: fine below about 80F (27C), questionable above that, and off the menu in a heat wave.
Serving spreadables without smearing a living tree#
The traditional method is to smear the food directly onto tree bark. It works, and it is worth thinking about before you make it a habit.
The problems are practical rather than dramatic. You cannot clean a tree trunk, so old fat stays in the bark crevices and goes rancid; the greasy patch collects seed hulls, dust and droppings; and a trunk baited with fat becomes a route for raccoons, rats and squirrels to climb, as covered in mice and rats and raccoons. Direct evidence that a smear of fat harms a healthy mature tree is thin, and the case against it does not need to rest on that.
- Use a dedicated spreadable feeder: a small ridged plate, a bowl feeder or a plastic bark-textured holder designed for the purpose.
- Or mount a piece of dead bark, a slab of rough log or a length of split branch on a post or fence, and spread onto that. It can be scrubbed, replaced or thrown away.
- Or use a drilled suet log, which is the same idea in a cleanable form. The options are compared in suet feeders.
- Keep it near cover but away from a trunk squirrels already climb.
- Put out an amount that is gone within a day or two, and scrape the surface clean before you reload.
- Stop entirely in hot weather, and wash the holder before it goes back out.
Soft fat and feathers do not mix
Any fat-based food that goes soft can transfer to a bird's head and breast feathers, and matted feathers lose their insulating structure. That matters most in the shoulder seasons, when a warm afternoon softens a product that was fine at dawn. If a spreadable food or a fat-bound cake is glossy and soft to the touch, bring it in.
Mold, weather and storage#
This is the failure mode that catches people out. A cylinder is a solid block with a large surface area sitting outdoors for a week or more. Gelatin and starch binders absorb water, and once the outer layer stays damp it grows mold that works inward.
- Hang cylinders under a weather dome or a wide roof. This is the single most effective thing you can do.
- Buy the size your yard will finish in a week or two. A 4.5 lb (2 kg) cylinder in a quiet yard is a mold experiment.
- In humid summer conditions, switch to loose seed and small quantities. Bound seed and August do not go together.
- Inspect the underside, where water collects and where fuzz appears first.
- Discard anything with visible mold, a musty smell or a blackened surface. The reasoning is the same as in moldy seed.
- Store spares sealed and cool, in the same way you would store loose seed: see storing bird seed.
Run one cylinder alongside loose seed, not instead of it
The setup that gets the most out of these products is a cheap loose-seed feeder doing the volume work and one cylinder or spreadable holder doing the low-mess, high-interest work. You get the species variety without paying eight times the price for your whole seed bill.
Choosing without being sold to#
Ignore the packaging and read the ingredient list, in the same way you would with a bag of seed mix. A cylinder built on sunflower hearts, peanuts and tree nuts is a different product from one built on millet and cracked corn with a sunflower dusting, whatever the front of the label says. If milo or wheat appears high in the list, the price per pound of food your birds will actually eat is worse than it looks.
Check what holds it, too. A cylinder needs a spike or cage sized to it, and manufacturers use different diameters, so a holder bought for one product may not fit another. A ring or wreath needs only a hook. A spreadable food needs a holder you are willing to wash.
Then judge it as you would any feeder food: what turns up, how much ends up on the ground, how long it lasts. If your yard is already well served by black oil sunflower and sunflower hearts in a feeder with a tray, a cylinder adds nothing but expense. If your problem is a patio you sweep every week, it may be the best thing on the shelf.
