Feeding birds is cheap per visit and surprising per year. This calculator turns four things you already know, how many feeders you run, how big they are, how often you refill them and what goes in them, into pounds and dollars per week, month and year.

Every price here is an approximate 2026 United States retail figure for seed in a 20 to 40 lb (9 to 18 kg) bag, and all of them move with the harvest and with freight. A 5 lb (2.3 kg) grocery bag can cost close to twice the per-pound figure used here. The figures match the price table in how much seed a feeder uses, where the worked annual budgets live.

Treat the output as a bracket, not a quote. Two near-identical setups a mile apart can differ by a factor of three, for local reasons: how many birds the neighborhood holds, how hard the winter runs, how much seed ends up on the ground.

The season multipliers (1.5 in winter, 1.0 in spring and fall, 0.45 in summer) are rough: they put winter use at roughly three times summer use, the cautious end of the usual range.

How to use the estimate#

  1. Count only feeders you actually keep filled. One that sits empty all winter is not part of the bill.
  2. Pick the size by what one full refill takes, not by the number on the box. A 2 quart tube holds under 2 lb (0.9 kg) of black oil sunflower, since a quart weighs about 0.8 lb (0.36 kg). See feeder capacity.
  3. Set refills to what you do now, in the season you are in, then move the season selector to see the rest of the year.
  4. With more than one seed, run it once per seed and add the totals. Averaging a $1 seed and a $4 seed hides the thing worth seeing.

The yearly figure is not the weekly figure times 52. It is weighted across roughly 18 winter weeks, 16 spring and fall weeks and 18 summer weeks, because a January rate held flat all year overstates the bill badly. One medium feeder refilled weekly in winter lands near 100 lb (45 kg) a year, the low end of the busy-yard range.

Why two yards on the same street use different amounts#

Consumption varies more than any other number in feeding. Five things account for most of the spread.

  • Species mix. A resident flock of house finches and goldfinches works through a feeder all day. Chickadees, titmice and nuthatches take one seed and carry it off, so the same number of visits drains far less.
  • Weather. Small birds burn much of their fat reserve overnight in hard cold and replace it next morning, so a cold snap lifts use sharply for a week. Winter feeding covers what to put out.
  • Competition. Blackbirds, starlings, doves and jays arrive as a group and can empty a hopper in a morning. Fast draining is not the same as popular.
  • Spill and sweep. Birds digging for the seed they want throw the rest out, and wind takes more from open trays. That is still seed you paid for, and it is most of the seed mess under a feeder.
  • Squirrels and night visitors. An unbaffled pole changes a seed bill more than any seed choice will. If the estimate says 3 lb (1.4 kg) a week and you buy 8 lb (3.6 kg), start at the pole: see squirrels.

When real use sits well above the estimate, the cause is usually mechanical rather than ornithological: a chewed port, a feeder swinging in the wind, something clearing it after dark. Evidence on how much any one yard wastes is thin, since nobody weighs what lands on the ground, so treat waste percentages, including those below, as illustrations.

Suet is priced per cake, so it sits outside the calculator: about $1.50 to $3.00 for an 11 to 12 oz (310 to 340 g) cake, one or two a week in winter.

What cuts the bill, in priority order#

Ordered by how much each usually saves, not by how easy it is.

  1. Stop buying filler. Milo, wheat, oats and red millet are kicked out by most feeder birds, so you pay to sweep them up. Read the ingredient list before the price tag, using choosing bird seed and seed mixes.
  2. Baffle the pole. A one-time purchase against an ongoing loss is the best trade in feeding.
  3. Buy in 40 lb (18 kg) bags, but only as much as you can store and use.
  4. Put a tray under hanging feeders. It catches what would fall, birds clear it, and it cuts the mess.
  5. Match the seed to the birds you get. A feeder of something nobody eats is a slow write-off, not a saving.
  6. Cut fill volumes in summer, when use falls anyway and heat spoils standing seed.
  7. Run one straight seed instead of three specialty ones. Black oil sunflower alone covers most of the species most yards get.

Time one bag, twice

Write the date on a 40 lb (18 kg) bag when you open it and note when it runs out, once in January and once in July. Two numbers from your own yard beat any calculator, this one included.

The bulk bag arithmetic, and its catch#

Bulk buying is the largest single price lever you have. Black oil sunflower at $1.30 per pound in a 40 lb (18 kg) bag costs about $52. The same 40 lb as eight 5 lb (2.3 kg) grocery bags at $2.00 to $2.60 per pound costs roughly $80 to $104. Calling that saving around 30 to 50 percent is as precise as anyone should be.

The catch is that seed is food and food goes off. In cool dry storage, use a bag within about three months, and in summer heat treat six to eight weeks as the limit. Decant into a sealed container with a lid a rodent cannot chew, keep it off a concrete floor, and never top up over old seed. Storing bird seed has the method, moldy seed the signs.

A moldy bag wipes out the saving and then some

Bulk savings stop the moment seed turns musty, clumped or dusty, and mold on seed can produce toxins that harm the birds eating it. Saving 40 cents a pound on 80 lb (36 kg) in August is a bad trade if a quarter of it spoils.

Why cheap mixes are false economy#

The cheapest bag on the shelf is almost always a mix built around milo, wheat, oats, red millet and cracked corn, with a dusting of sunflower on top so it looks right through the plastic. Birds sort it and the rest hits the ground.

Cost per pound eaten is the only number that matters

A 40 lb (18 kg) bag of filler mix at $0.90 per pound costs $36. If birds kick out 40 percent of it, you paid $36 for 24 lb (11 kg) of food eaten, about $1.50 per pound. That is more than straight black oil sunflower, which nearly everything at a feeder takes.

That is the same conclusion reached in seed mix versus straight seed, from a different direction. The calculator cannot see rejection, because only you know what lies under your feeder. If the ground is covered in pale round seeds nobody touches, add 30 to 50 percent to the cost figure before comparing it against a straight seed.

When a higher price per pound is genuinely cheaper#

Black oil sunflower is commonly around 40 percent hull by weight, so a pound of whole seed holds roughly 0.6 lb (0.27 kg) of kernel. At $1.30 per pound you are paying about $2.17 per pound of actual food. Sunflower hearts at $2.60 per pound are all kernel, so on calories the two are close, and hearts win on everything you would otherwise rake up.

That is the real case for hearts and for no-mess blends: no hull layer under the feeder, no dead patch on the lawn, less to draw rodents, no complaints on a balcony. Their weakness is spoilage, because the hull was packaging, so buy less at a time.

The counterexample is nyjer, among the priciest seeds per pound and among the cheapest to run, because a nyjer feeder is emptied slowly by small finches and by nobody else. In a yard with no goldfinches or siskins it is the most expensive seed you own, and it goes rancid before it goes empty. Price per pound eaten, by birds you actually have, is the whole answer. How much does it cost to feed birds for a year?

At approximate 2026 United States prices, budget roughly $150 to $250 a year for one feeder and a suet cage, $300 to $500 for two or three feeders, and $600 to $900 for a full station with a ground tray. The calculator gives seed only, so add suet cakes at about $1.50 to $3.00 each on top if you run them through the winter.

How much seed does one feeder use in a week?

A medium feeder in a moderately busy yard commonly takes 3 to 6 lb (1.4 to 2.7 kg) a week in winter and 1 to 2 lb (0.45 to 0.9 kg) in summer. A quiet yard may use a third of that. If yours empties much faster, suspect squirrels, spill or a leaking port before assuming you have unusual bird numbers.

Why is the yearly figure not the weekly figure times 52?

Because consumption is seasonal. The calculator converts your entry back to a spring and fall baseline, then weights a year as roughly 18 winter weeks at 1.5 times that baseline, 16 spring and fall weeks at 1.0, and 18 summer weeks at 0.45. Multiplying a January week by 52 would overstate the annual bill by a wide margin.

Is it really cheaper to buy a 40 lb bag?

Usually yes, by somewhere around 30 to 50 percent per pound compared with 5 lb (2.3 kg) supermarket bags, though the exact gap depends on the store and the seed. The saving only holds if you can store it sealed and dry and use it within about three months in cool weather, or six to eight weeks in summer humidity.

Does the calculator account for what squirrels and spill take?

No, and that is the largest source of error in it. It costs what you put into the feeder, not what birds eat. If seed is disappearing faster than the estimate, the difference is nearly always squirrels, wind, spill or a damaged feeder, and fixing that saves more money than switching seed does.
