Snags, Dead Wood and Leaf Litter

A dead tree feeds more birds than a live one. The hard part is deciding which dead trees you can responsibly leave standing.

The short answer

  • Dead and decaying wood hosts the beetle larvae, ants and grubs that woodpeckers, nuthatches, creepers and wrens depend on.
  • Nearly every cavity-nesting bird in North America relies on a hole excavated in dead or dying wood, usually by a woodpecker.
  • Safety comes first: judge a snag by what it would hit if it fell. Anything that could reach a house, a path, a fence or a neighbor's yard should come down or be shortened.
  • A shortened trunk left standing, or a fallen log left where it lies, delivers most of the benefit with none of the risk.
  • Leaving fall leaves under shrubs and beds overwinters moths, beetles and spiders, which is next spring's nestling food.

The most productive bird habitat in most yards is the part homeowners are trained to remove. A standing dead tree, a decaying limb, a fallen log and a bed of unraked leaves between them supply a large share of the insect food and essentially all of the natural nest cavities that a yard produces.

Nothing else replaces them. A suet feeder supplies calories, but it does not supply the beetle larvae a downy woodpecker probes for, and it certainly does not supply somewhere to nest.

What dead wood actually provides#

Three distinct things, and they arrive on different timescales.

Insects, immediately. As soon as a tree dies, wood-boring beetle larvae, carpenter ants, termites and their predators colonize it. That is the food supply that woodpeckers evolved to exploit, and it is why a dead limb attracts more woodpecker attention than the whole living crown beside it. Nuthatches and brown creepers work the same surfaces, and Carolina wrens probe the crevices.

Foraging and drumming structure, quickly. Bare limbs make ideal hunting perches for flycatchers and bluebirds, and a resonant dead branch is what a woodpecker drums on to advertise territory in early spring. Sound living wood does not carry.

Cavities, in a few years. Woodpeckers excavate a fresh hole most seasons, usually in dead or dying wood soft enough to work. What they abandon becomes housing for chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, wrens, bluebirds, screech owls and more. Almost no other bird can excavate its own cavity, so the woodpecker is the whole supply chain.

Why nest boxes exist

Nest boxes are a substitute for dead wood. They became necessary because tidy landscapes and managed woodlots removed the snags that cavity nesters depend on. A box is a good intervention; a safe snag is the original.

The safety judgment, done properly#

A dead tree will fall. The question is not whether but where, and that question has an objective answer.

Estimate the tree's height, then look at the circle of that radius around it. If that circle contains a house, garage, shed, deck, fence, power line, driveway, path, play area or a neighbor's property, the tree is not a candidate for leaving standing. Sentiment does not enter into it.

Have an arborist look at anything you are unsure about, particularly a large tree, and ask specifically about the root plate and the base. A trunk that is sound at eye level can be hollow at ground level.

Never do the work yourself on a standing dead tree

Dead wood behaves unpredictably under a saw: it splits, barber-chairs, and drops limbs without warning. Felling or climbing a snag is the kind of job that injures experienced people. Hire someone insured, and say up front that you want the maximum safe height left standing.

Creating a safe snag#

The compromise that satisfies both the arborist and the birds is a shortened trunk. When a dead tree has to be reduced, ask for the lower 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.5 m) to be left standing rather than the stump ground out.

A trunk that short cannot reach anything when it eventually fails, and it still delivers most of the value: insect habitat, a drumming post, a perch, and in time a soft core that a woodpecker can excavate. Leaving a few stubs of limb rather than a clean pole gives birds somewhere to land.

If even that is not acceptable where you live, the cut sections still have a use. Stand a 4 foot (1.2 m) log upright in a border, or leave a couple of large logs lying at the yard edge. They rot, grow fungi, and feed the same insect community at ground level. A log next to a brush pile compounds the effect.

Dead wood at ground level#

A fallen log is habitat, not yard waste. Its underside stays damp, which supports beetle larvae, ants, millipedes, salamanders and the spiders that hunt them.

Loose, sloughing bark is worth as much as the wood underneath. Brown creepers wedge their nests behind it, bats roost under it in summer, and overwintering insects pack into the gap. Resist the urge to strip bark off a log or a stump to make it look neater, because the space between bark and wood is the habitat.

Ground-foraging birds work logs hard. Thrushes, towhees, song sparrows and wrens all turn debris along the sides of a decaying log, and northern flickers will feed at one directly, because flickers eat ants more than they eat anything from a feeder.

Leave logs where they fall unless they are in the way. If they are, drag them to a corner rather than cutting them into rounds and hauling them off.

Leave the leaves#

Fall leaf litter is the other half of the same argument, and it is the easier one to act on because it costs nothing and saves work.

A large share of moths and butterflies overwinter as pupae in leaf litter or as eggs on fallen stems. Beetles, spiders, native bees and countless other invertebrates do the same. Bagging every leaf in November removes next spring's insect population, and that population is what your nesting birds will be feeding to their chicks in May. It is the ground-level version of the food web described in native plants for birds.

Practical version, since nobody wants a lawn buried under six inches of oak leaves:

  • Rake leaves off the lawn and into beds, under shrubs and around the base of trees, in a layer a few inches deep.
  • Leave perennial stems standing through winter and cut them back in late spring rather than fall.
  • Skip the shredder where you can. Shredding kills most of what is overwintering in there.
  • Wait for consistent warmth before any spring cleanup, so that insects have emerged.

The birds notice quickly. A leaf bed under a shrub is where juncos, white-throated sparrows and towhees do their double-scratch foraging all winter, and it is the reason those species turn up in some yards and not others.

Put leaf litter where you already feed ground birds

Rake a few inches of leaves into the bed nearest your ground feeder. Sparrows, juncos and towhees will work the litter between visits to the seed, and you get to watch behavior that a bare lawn never produces.

What to do this fall#

  • Walk the yard and identify dead wood: standing trees, dead limbs, fallen logs.
  • Apply the fall-radius test to anything standing, and call an arborist about the rest.
  • Ask for a shortened trunk rather than full removal wherever it is safe.
  • Leave fallen logs at the yard edge instead of hauling them.
  • Rake leaves into beds, not into bags, and leave perennial stems standing.
  • Add a nest box where the yard genuinely has no cavities yet, following the sizing in nest boxes: sizing and siting.

Do those things and the yard starts producing its own food and housing instead of importing both. Combine it with water, cover and native planting from the bird-friendly yard checklist, and the feeders become the supplement they were always meant to be.
