Clark's Nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana) is a pale ash-gray corvid of subalpine conifer forest in the mountains of western North America, roughly jay-sized but built differently: a long, straight, pointed black bill, black wings with a bold white trailing patch, and a black tail with white outer feathers that flash as the bird lands.

It is one of the most consequential birds on the continent, and almost nobody outside the mountain West has seen one. Whitebark pine, the keystone tree of high western slopes, has cones that stay closed and seeds with no wings. Left alone, the seeds fall under the parent tree and go nowhere. The realistic confusion is with Canada Jay, because the two share habitat and both are gray and both come to picnic tables. Look at the wings. A nutcracker's are crisp black with white; a Canada Jay's are the same soft gray as the rest of the bird. Look at the bill too: a nutcracker's is a long spike built for prying cones apart.

The whitebark pine partnership#

Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) grows at and near treeline across the northern Rockies, Cascades and Sierra Nevada. Its cones stay closed at maturity and its large seeds have no wings, an arrangement that makes no sense until you add the bird.

A nutcracker tears into the cone with that spike of a bill, extracts the seeds, tests them (it can tell a full seed from an empty one by weight and feel), and packs the good ones into a pouch beneath its tongue. Each trip ends with the bird making several caches of a few seeds each, then going back for more. Do not hand-feed at roadsides or campsites

Breeding on last year's seeds#

Nutcrackers nest early, often building in late winter and laying from roughly February through April depending on elevation and latitude. The nest is a bulky platform of twigs with a deep insulated cup, usually placed on a horizontal conifer branch.

Clutches are small, typically 2 or 3 eggs. Unusually for songbirds, both sexes develop a brood patch and both incubate, which lets the pair keep eggs covered continuously in cold conditions.
